You're right. I'm all for the sake of safety. Can't really enjoy a race if your favorite driver busts into flames after falling from the edge of a cliff. But it gave the sport that extra heat (See what I did there) in order to put the extra effort to wake up early in the morning or stay up late to watch a race on the other side of the world, and it was worth it because you never knew what would happen.

I have read that in the early days of F1 drivers would go out partying the night before because they knew they might not make it to the end of the race alive.

Perfectly reasonable. I think Nikki Lauda said something about drivers crying either before or after the race because the cars were so fast and dangerous. For all intents and purposes they were very fast coffins.



That sense of danger or uncertainty was that necessary evil that made the sport so interesting. Or listening to those glorious V10s. If you excuse me I'm going to watch some racing from the 80s and 90s because now I'm reminiscing.

The fatality rate is really on par with most mainstream motor sports and being significantly more dangerous appears to be more marketing hype than reality. Most occurred from the 50s through the 80s when safety standards were low (or didn’t even exist)

As best I can determine over the last 70 years. For just drivers.
F1 - 43
Indy - 46
NASCAR - 32
NHRA drag racing - 28

In fact the winner is illegal street racing at 100+ a year over the last 20 years in the US alone. No numbers prior to that but I would guess that the percentage compared to cars on the roads would be the same so we have thousands in total.

You have a totally different perspective and priorities than them. Not all jobs need or want to be in peak physical condition.
My brother in law is a great example. He was in infantry for 35 years. The first 20 were spent with boots on the ground. He was injured 3 times but remained fit. The last 15 he spent as an administrator including two tours to afghanistan. He gained weight and was about as fit as your average person on the street but was also very good at his job.
Getting soldiers to perfect top fitness is your job but they don’t all need that same level.

F1 was never really on my bucket list... until I heard they are coming to Vegas. Racing down the strip just seems so awesome I might try to go to that.

Im sure you could persuade the CSM to push PT. CSM or 1SGT love anything that makes soldier's life miserable.

I’m trying to get to a Ranger bat or at least a motivated infantry unit. Idk if I’m high speed enough for SF lol but I’d LOVE to do that!

Pretty much sums up that all motor sports are hazardous. Some just play it up more because human love to watch disasters unfold.

If they open it up I would
