I unconsciously pick up accents wherever I go. It takes effort for me to not do it.

I went to a summer camp where half of the staffers were British and half of the kids were Mexican. We all had really weird accents by the end.

In the UK, you only have to travel 10/15miles and the accents change.. some of regional accents are very easy to pick-up. Some are bloody difficult to follow, we watch certain TV dramas with the subtitles....

As for American accents, do they switch state to state or is it more East/West/South thing?

It's like Pilot says. There are regional differences but then also pockets of distinct ones. Seems to be especially so up and down the East Coast.

There are common regional accents and local accents in cities. For example, NYC has a few to itself, and all are completely different than ones you might find in Buffalo.

That being said, I can't tell the difference between someone from rural Maryland vs someone from rural New Hampshire by accent because they have the same regional accent.

Difficult accents anywhere they have the Queen or animals on their money, like Portland or Louisiana.

it's about every 10-15 miles...

so just imagine the UK, but on a much larger scale

if i head down south, it only takes me about a 4 days to pick up the accent. mostly because i like the drawl. but the big city accents irritate me, so it takes a couple weeks for any of those bad habits.

All I have to do is walk into a different cubicle/office never mind travel anywhere....

I've lived my entire life in what could be considered the South with the exception of one year in Maryland. But, it's always been in a melting pot area, Fayetteville, NC (army and air force town), South Florida and Atlanta.

I speak with what I consider a light Southern accent, unless I'm talking to a family member then it's full on NC/Southern Andy Griffith style.

The company where I work is 20% native Alabama (heavy Southern accents and phrases), 40% native Georgian (lighter Southern) and the rest are transplants from somewhere else. We definitely pick up phrasing and "sayings" from one and another.
