Why not? Not everyone that can afford a more expensive car buys the more expensive car if it doesn't do what they want.

People cross shop new and used cars all the time. Even new and new of different classes. Used Cayman, Corvette or Supra vs a new 86+FI or CTR+bolt-ons or Z. If someone was set on a JDM sports car then there aren’t a lot of options.

I guess.. I mean I looked at getting a MK5 Supra but I need something with more hauling capacity so I'll get a CX-50 instead. Am I doing it right? Also if someone wanted a manual Supra, the M2 already existed with a better manual than the potential crunchy one offered in the CTR.

if he's leasing, i believe it. most people that lease generally have a little more flexibility financially. in thinking about it, but not looking it up, a ctr and supra likely has pretty similar lease payments, as the msrp's are pretty close together.

i'm just more surprised the part of cross-shopping a 4-door high performance hatchback with a grand touring coupe.

I did at one point. Nothing wrong with trying to figure out what fits you. Test drive and buy what you desire. I did end up with the Supra. If my dealer didn't have the Supra sitting in the lot, I would've brought home the CTR.

He went from an FRS > Benz CLA > Type R.

When he had the Benz he did tell me he wanted his next car to be a BMW M2 CS.

His criteria definitely changed since getting the CLA and returning it.

I was actually surprised he went Type R though, i thought he'd continue on with the Luxury or higher end makes.

But you cant deny the all-roundness appeal of the Type R though.

Until I joined this forum, I didn't realize so many folks considered cross shopping odd combinations an odd thing. I thought everyone considered all their options anytime spending 10's of thousands of dollars on something.

It's a certain type of car enthusiast. Maybe the purest type. They follow whatever their heart is telling them in the moment and end up with a very long and interesting list of cars owned. Hey, if you can afford it, go for it.

When you dont actually have any specific needs (ie you are single and you can get whatever you feel like) you'll get whatever you want. Over time when your needs start to change and you have more specific criteria, i think some cars just either get crossed off the list or isn't considered at all.

I highly doubt i'll get a GR Corolla but i have given it consideration as a possible next car (Corolla or even hot hatches were never on my radar...after the 86 i believed i would just be moving towards the luxury brands). We just had our annual massive snow dump and having AWD in addition to being a fun to drive manual car would be greatly beneficial at this time. I had to take the wife's BMW X1 to work instead of the 86 because theres like a 99% chance i would be stuck in the snow just exiting my garage.

Well, as an example, as the 86 approaches 200K miles I've started thinking about my next vehicle. So far, the list consists of new and used in no particular order:

CTS-V or CTS-V Sport
CT5-V (Blackwing, although I could afford it, is out of my set price range)
Silverado EV (I have a reservation for one)
Lyriq (I'm on the early order list)
Suburban Diesel
Ford Maverick
KIA EV6 or Hyundai ioniq 5
Hyundai Santa Cruz
Toyota BZ4X
Camaro ZL1 or SS

The Corvette (C7) was on the list until I rode in the passenger seat of one. Absolutely miserable experience.

I think some enthusiasts like variety or trying different cars that they think might be fun. If money was no option I have a list of very different cars I’d like to own.
