It's funny that most of the competition in that test are hot-hatches and almost no car is significantly more expensive than the twins (not too surprising given the price cap, but still). In that company it's no wonder the Twins won.

In the US, on the other hand, they pit the Twins against things like the 992 GT3 (which won, obviously) that MSRPs at more than 5x the cost, before looking at options (which can easily out-cost an entire new Twin) or markups (which can be more than the base price of the GT3)...

For us non-Aussies, is Motor the equivalent to one of the major US magazines like Car and Driver, Road and Track, or Motor Trend?

Even on a global market hot hatches are about the only cars left to compare them to if keeping costs and relative performance in check. If you reduced it to two door coupes the MX5 Miata is all that's left. Cayman/Boxters are more expensive and powerful. The Alpine A110 and Lotus Emira are far more expensive. Cars like the Z4, Supra, Nissan Z are not a good match up. Not sure an Ecoboost Mustang would even be a good match-up either despite base model cost being similar. It's a totally different type of car.

Motor is one step above spam. They make shit up as they wish, plagiarize other people's made up shit and all in all are not a reliable source for anything automotive.
The fact that they called it sports car of the year has about as much meaning as farting into the wind.
How is the "Mustang a totally different car" but hot hatchs are comparable?
Not sure why the need to compare it to anything anyway.

My thought is many of hot hatches are closer in weight and power, where a Mustang is much larger, heavier, and powerful, even in Ecoboost form. I've always viewed the Mustang and Camaro to be more similar to something like a BMW 4 Series coupe or a Merc C Class coupe than anything like a BRZ or even a Supra/Z4 and Nissan Z. Mostly due to size, weight, and driving experience than anything like power output or even track times.

If no one did a comparison than how could anyone claim to be better than someone else?

At least the Mustang has the right drive wheels. Any FWD or even AWD should immediately be ruled out. This does of course not leave much to play with.

I think Donut rankings are less arbitrary and meaningless than MOTOR somehow ranking the BRZ as the top "Sports Car" against one other sports car (Miata), a field of hot hatches, and a GT car.

There are 2 categories. From the Motor Magazine website.

PERFORMANCE CAR OF THE YEAR

For 2022 there are two awards: a Sports Car of the Year award, in this instance for cars priced up to $100,000, and a Performance Car of the Year award for the more expensive machinery.
Both of these awards are judged not against the cars gathered, but against the time-honoured PCOTY criteria of performance, dynamics, accessibility, liveability, value and X-factor.

It’s a magazine that’s been around in Australia since 1954, so yeah quite reputable.

Motor Magazine and Wheels Magazine are the big 2 here and are still widely read and are owned by the one company, but this wasn’t always the case.

They are both on the website below, W in the top right corner is Wheels, M in the top right corner for Motor and will take you to their sub-sites.

It’s not motoring.com.au, which I know you hate, different animal that is now part of carsales. If you click on the link below it’ll now take you to the Carsales website.

All the same these days. Competition for click pennies have ruined them all.

It seems to me this organization doesn't know what a sports car is.
