The key to lowering any perceived risk is:

  • To not use excess pressure or rubbing when cleaning it.
  • Examine them when doing maintenance for damage or wear to the filtering material. Replace if suspect.
  • Don’t over oil after the cleaning. If it’s dripping you’re doing it wrong!

Have been running K&N filters since ’89 in my cars without any issues due to the filter.
No excess oil consumption, no sensors destroyed, some well past 300k/Km.

Exactly, oil will take out the MAF sensor. It will not destroy it but it will not work until you clean it correct.

Is there a trend towards dry filters again?

Gotta do that. Its my biggest gripe about this car, Been putting it off because of that sticky stuff. were you able to do it by removing the speakers?

That's why I don't use them anymore. Too little gain for the potential risk.

Somewhat, but it seems like there is styrofoam directly behind the carpet which I didn't remove.

Good read, thanks for that. Maybe I’ll just add the Mishimoto silicon inlet tube, adds 3 whp and 2 tqs apparently with the stock filter, might be less risk and tidies the engine bay up a bit by getting rid of the sound tube, my main goal.

If you're looking for tidy, the sound tube delete is one part but I find myself bothered by the resonator tube that comes off of the side of the intake box. It seems to take up a lot of space for science I dont' understand And the TRD intake is just as wide as the stock box AND that resonator. Oh well.

If there's enough oil on the filter to transfer to and impede the MAF's function then you put too much oil on the filter.

Then, again after advice here, I used a hand sucker to remove excess oil from the sump via the dipstick tube. Really didn't want to get ramps and stands for such a simple job. Removed half a litre and the oil level is now just over the top mark, hot or cold. Much happier with it now.
I thought I sent this earlier but don't see it anywhere. Were you able to do it by removing the speakers? Thus avoiding dealing with the awful sticky stuff on the plastic? That's all that's keeping me from doing it so far.
