A quick question for the techie types. i own and used to have installed a 2-disk synology NAS, 2TB raid array iirc. i gave up on it. the thing about having an NAS is that you must maintain it. anything that went on the NAS for backup also ended up backed up to a couple different external drives when i'd refresh the OS. so i've got backups of backups of backups for my backups..

and then it needed software updates, at least quarterly monitoring/checkups to make sure everything was well, all to suck power down 24/7 for the 3 times i needed it every year...

i just stick with external drives now. and with falling cost of data, could even get some huge flash drives(to avoid the spinning rust contamination fears) for the purpose as well.

not for $10k i don't. the appeal of the grom is that it's the cost of what a beater car used to be. and it's still fun. once i start getting above $8k in starting costs, things start to get serious. the vehicle options at $10k would also include a number of miata's. and they have heat and sometimes a/c!

Didn't know it was even out till you said something! Going to be a long couple/few months waiting for it. Been loving Mandalorian and Boba Fett. I think Disney has been doing great (since they learned their audience).

I have an old NAS at home that has our home video/ripped music on it, but I really need to update it. For everything else, I've converted to cloud storage for replication and backup. Much simplier, as long as you have the bandwidth.

At present I have a 4TB internal mechanical HD that currently stores most of the data I use. Mostly, it's image files, but also use some pretty large numerical data sets (State and R).

I'm afraid I'm a bit limited bandwidth wise. My plan is to use the nas server for interactive data storage. Thanks for the suggestions.

Good points. Thanks. Several of the 512 flash drives might be good for offline backups.

LMAO as a server administrator I can attest that you can certainly create exponentially more work than you save in automation.
