Isn’t it remarkable how one model year car is a sought after collection piece and another you have to pay someone to tow it away? In the 1960s, if I had a crystal ball and a pocket full of folding money, I would be real popular today. Today’s BRZ in 1968 dollars could buy a base 1968 Corvette Stingray. A good 1968 Corvette might be worth the cost of a new BRZ. Did it appreciate in value? Not if you factor in inflation. You could say it held its own, barely. The aforementioned 1993 Supra MSRP was about $39,900 so that would be roughly $79,000 today. The guy who bought it for $91,000 got offers for over $100,000 the next day. As an investment, I don’t think it is any great thing, but he bought it as an enthusiast, not as an investment. By comparison, I had a real estate transaction that fits the dollar value and time frame of the 1993 Supra, more or less. After inflation and other deductions, I more than doubled my initial investment. It is a rare car that most of us mere-mortals can afford that can make investment quality returns. Getting back to that twenty year old Porsche; not only did it deprecate, it will cost you more than average to keep it going. That might cut into the fun-factor just a bit if you have a budget. Last time I was at the Mercedes-Benz dealer for service, I had a chat with a sales guy and he told me that buying a new Mercedes is cheaper than a used one out of warranty. Repairs will eat every dollar you saved. The exception is if it’s a classic and you still have deep pockets. Looking at the invoices, I can see he has a good point. Subaru BRZ: good fun cheap.

I bought a 2006 987.1 Boxster in 2016 for $20k CAD, drove it for 3 years and had lots of fun with it, and sold it for $19k in 2019 (before the current used car bubble began; now similar ones are $25k CAD). I spent $500 fixing minor pre-existing issues the car had when I bought it, and had zero issues over 3 years of ownership. It was a pretty nice looking car too, much more attractive than the 986. My upcoming new BRZ won’t come close to the fun per dollar that my used 987.1 gave, though it’s still a great value in the current market.

That Boxster is a nice looking car. I like the profile. I keep thinking about a new Cayman S as an alternative. If money is no object, would you consider the Porsche or get the BRZ and spend the difference on other fun stuff. People I knew are assuming room temperature these days and it serves as a reminder that you can’t take it with you.

In my case, I currently have a Porsche 718 Spyder as my fancy sports car. However, I wanted a cheaper and metal roofed sports car for daily driver duties. Something that I wouldn’t worry about leaving in the grocery store parking lot, and would be less worried about damaging if I track it. In the 987.1 family, the 2006-2008 2.7L models are pretty solid, though bore scoring is a concern on the 3.4L M97 engine used by the 2006-2008 Cayman S and 2007-2008 Boxster S. I decided to get a 2022 BRZ instead of another 987 because I wanted something new and different from what I have owned and currently own, like having CarPlay, the peace of mind a warranty brings, and the practicality of folding rear seats.

Many people on Rennlist are considering a new BRZ or GR86 as either a cheaper sports car to go alongside their Porsche, or to replace aging entry level models (944 and 986).

A few months ago I decided that I wanted to try a convertible, maybe out of fear of missing out. I've been driving for 45 years and the closest I came was a wagon with a large sunroof. My choices came down to a newer Miata or an older Boxster. I went with the older Boxster, figuring it's already 14 years old and shouldn't depreciate too much if I decide a convertible is not for me and I move on to something else. Based on performance numbers alone, the Boxster and the 86 are pretty evenly matched. I'll have to decide for myself if the sound of the flat six and the chance for wind in what's left of my hair will win out over the practicality and lower operating expense of the Hakone.

I was reading this thread recently on Rennlist:

https://rennlist.com/forums/other-ma...ispreloading=1

Granted most of those users have newer models of the Cayman/Boxter, but the charms of the car for non-Porsche owners still apply.

The Porsche community didn't welcome the Boxster with open arms.
If it's not rear engined it's not a Porsche.

This exact statement applies to every car I ever considered until I finally settled on an 86 as my first third car haha.

Just like how the Cancel Crowd invalidates everyone who is not of their ilk and then they turn on one another when someone in their midst deviates on a single point. There is a social hierarchy over at Mercedes-Benz where if you have a C-Class or some other “Entry Level” MB, you have to come in through the servant’s door. One day while I had my Sprinter at the shop I overheard a snooty woman disparaging owners of the lesser Mercedes-Benz cars. Since I don’t need any new friends, I butted in with, “My Mercedes has a Queen bed and a flush toilet…. does yours?” But then, I almost descended to the level of condescension watching a YouTube channel where a young So-Cal dude turned his 2022 BRZ into a non-street legal Ricer-mobile. I was going to add a comment about how he should move out of his parents house and get a real job and that a YouTube channel is not a career unless you have a very large loyal following. Dad might want to park his car in his garage. Then I read comments from the devotees who unanimously approve with, “Dope” and “Sick”. Apparently that means good stuff, so anything I might say would definitely make me out to be the Troll. I’ll leave that to the police who write a citation nearly every time he hits the street.
