How well they'll work on the new car is another question. Do we already have dyno figures of gen. 2s on E85?

Also, it's not surprising a much taller-geared auto, with a much milder exhaust note, will feel slower than his gen. 1.
As far as I am aware, we don't even have a tuning option for the 2022's. I should be getting my 2022 (Neptune GR86) in about a month which means I have to decontent my 2020 soon. I need to take out most of the stereo I put in (good thing I left the original harnesses in place and have all the equipment), put the stock header back, and, re-flash back to stock.

I will keep the header and the OFT. I already know the header will fit but won't install it until I have a tuning option. I have my fingers crossed that it will simply be a matter of downloading a new tune but I am not holding my breath.

you lose some wheel torque when choosing a tc auto over a manual so should be pretty obvious why it felt slower not to mention your twin was modified. This forum has already seen clearly that a 2nd gen twin with the same amount of modifications would easily trounce on a 1st gen. so just ask yourself if you wanna go for the whole experience again, or maybe you want something totally stock as I bet a manual GR86 will be pretty close if not faster than your FRS.

I still think first gen looks great so no shame in keeping her. I was close to keeping my first gen along with getting a new one but I just don't have the space for a 3rd vehicle atm and with used car prices being so good it was good hard to pass up the opportunity

Automatics still have taller gears no? That makes a huge difference in how peppy a car feels.

True, maybe I can put a roof rack basket on the car, and carry gas cans for longer trips. Overlanding.

"I don't have many mods.." then proceeds to list out the maximum extent of mods that I would ever consider doing to the car, maybe minus BBK, lol

I say keep the FRS, wait until the 2nd Gen is more readily available to try it out again and decide down the road if it is worth it for you.

Same story with suspension. You've got significant changes to your 1st gen, including coilovers and various arms and bushings. I wouldn't expect a stock 2nd gen to feel anything but sloppier and less responsive than your car.

I own a similarly modded 1st gen (E85, coilovers, bushings, BBK, LWFW) and I realize I'm going to have to temper my expectations with my 2nd gen. It's probably not going to feel faster. It will definitely feel duller/less responsive. But just imagine how good it'll be after you finish moving your mods over and tune it on E85.
I did the mods incrementally on the 1st gen over many years, and didn't feel much difference for each incremental mod. But maybe they add up and change the feel of the car in a significant way. Guess I need to drive a stock first gen and stock 2nd gen to compare.

I am hopeful if I put in the same mods in 2nd gen it will be that much better than first gen.
Decided to keep the first gen(I like the way it feels currently with the mods and car only has 30k miles), and wait to pick up a second gen on used market in a few months so I'll have something new to modify.

a lot of mods from the first gens are compatible with second gens. If you're willing to put in the elbow grease to revert your first gen to stock, you can minimize the dent on the wallet from the losses incurred by selling the car with mods. Curious to find out if things like headers from fa20 will offer any benefit to the second gens once tuning solutions are available.

afaik, the bulk of bbks, coilovers, exhausts off a first gen will bolt right up to the gr86, (reduced compatibility with the 2nd gen brz due to different steering knuckle)

Yeah I get the concern. For guys with 1st gen cars on E85, it's a tough call. Our cars are close to the same speed as a 2nd gen stock. Less power, a bit less weight. The 2nd gen should still be quicker but a small enough difference that it might be hard to tell especially on the top end.

Whenever I wonder whether it's the right decision, I just imagine the FA24 potentially making 230+ whp on E85 and that usually settles my mind lol.

Some things I've accepted will always be objectively slightly worse (steering feel, overall weight gain). Some changes are subjectively worse but I'm hopeful I'll grow to like them over time (digital gauge cluster, exterior styling). But overall I'm confident the improvements to the engine are going to outweigh any of the negatives above.

I think once Subaru and Toyota eventually decide to stop making the 2nd gen and knowing there will be no ICE 3rd gen (if at all) that’ll get a lot of people over the line to upgrade. If Subaru and Toyota came out now and said they were only going to make the 2nd gen for another 12 months I’d have to seriously consider buying one.

I’d probably keep both for a while and see which one I prefer.
