All-new 2023 Nissan Z makes world debut!

I've always hated candy apple red / burgundy / maroon on a car. It's what people get when they don't want to look boring by getting grey/black/white, but they don't want a flashy color either. It's so non-committal. Just get gray already, or commit to an actual red. I'd prefer brown and I hate brown on almost everything.

Then again, I’m just some rando on the Internet, get the color you want, you do you!

I’m sure there is a component of not wanting to be so flashy, but by that argument, almost everyone except the youth are non-committal, for they by far are the flashiest group with the most boisterous colors like highlighter yellow and giant wings, canards, stickers, etc. In fact, white/black/grey are by a huge margin the most popular colors for being less flashy and better resale value, so most people must be non-committal.

Interestingly, pastel tones tend to be more popular with certain populations like women, but older people tend to like tones that are classic or darker while being warmer or cooler like maroon, midnight blue, rose red, plum purple, British racing green, creamy white, champagne silver, etc. With the average age of car buyers getting older and older (around 54 now), expect colors to reflect their interests more than the interests of the youth.

If you look at color tables of cars of the past of different decades then there are a lot more pastels and cool/warm tones. There is a lot more variety. Look at all the reds.

Dealers tend to fill their lots with colors that are the least offensive to the most people. That's why gray-scale neutrals are so common. Black, gray, silver and white may not incite passion in many people, but for the most part they don't instill much hatred either. Since most people buy new cars off the lot, as opposed to ordering one from the factory as was commonplace decades ago, they settle for a safe color most of the time.
I've had my fill of gray-scale cars over the years. These days I look for something out of the ordinary. Which explains why the last few cars I've purchased have been burgundy-purple, deep emerald green and bright orange.

We’re talking sports cars, not 4 door economy boxes. Go ahead, drive a gray cuv or optima. but for the love driving get a yellow Z or a Shark Blue 911 instead of something champagne silver.

Some of my favorite colors on sports cars:

Baltic Blue MKIV Supra. The midnight blue of Porsches and Montego blue of the FD RX7.

Cool blue, Arctic blue, blue silver. Miata has a wonderful silver that is a metallic silver with a hue of blue. It looks like liquid metal T1000.

Anthracite grey Supra

British Racing Green

Rosso Villa d’Este red, Volcanic red

that's sort of the exception that proves the rule. That color on a Ferrari is eye-catching partially because it's different and you would never expect it. Still, in the end, it's about the same color as my 2004 Suburban if it had a pearl coat.

Blue, red and yellow are the too choices. Grey and black can be done easily too, with the right car and lots of work on the paint definition.

Honestly, arguing over the colours other people choose is pointless. Colour preferences are highly subjective (and in my case, vary depending on the car itself). If someone wants a beige sport car, so be it. I recall seeing a Ferrari 458 a few years ago that someone had wrapped in matte hot pink. I thought it looked hideous, but ultimately it was their money and so their choice.

Yeah, I don't really get it. Not like the other person is going to GAF. Who cares

Let's assume for a moment that at $35K the Mustang GT and Camaro SS are losing $10K per car - they cost $45K to build, market, warranty, and sell.

But Ford and Chevy sell Escalades and F-150 Platinums, so the bean counters just look the other way - there is a reason GM is rumored to have spent $3 billion making the C8 Corvette and loses $20K on the base trim yet still profits billions in cash each year.

Let's also assume that the 400Z costs $40K to build, market, warranty, and sell. So it costs $5K less to build than the GT or SS, and is breakeven at its sale price of $40K.

So in this situation, the 400Z, Supra, and other sports cars all look bad because they can't compete or don't want to compete with Ford and Chevy who might choose to eat losses so they remain competitive in the segment.

Granted, it could be something else entirely, but this is just an example of what could be going and why we can't assume Nissan is just being dense... although the company is only now working to get out of the hole it dug itself into.
I don't entirely agree with that viewpoint. For one thing, GM uses the Alpha platform for the Camaro. The Alpha platform is also used by a variety of Cadillacs. Additionally, every engine found in the Camaro is also found in other GM products.

That being said, I find it disappointing that the new Z car is heavier than a V6 Camaro. The Camaro is significantly larger and has a rear seat. Yet is 100 lb lighter. Lame Nissan, lame. But its still MUCH lighter than a 300ZX TT. Someone quoted earlier that the TT was also sub 3500 lb. That's not true. It was way over 3600 lb and was heavier than every early/mid 90s competitor (NSX, FD RX7, MkIV Supra, Corvette, 911) except for the 3000GT VR4 (which had AWD).

The new name, just Z, strikes me as dumb. Fairlady Z would be the best name at this point, and if I bought one that's the badge I'd put on it.

Dealership chosen car colors suuuuuuuuuuck. My Cayman was black because it was very difficult to find one with an interesting color and the options I wanted...and a price I could deal with. It was even worse for the C63. I'm convinced that 90% of C63s are black. And of the remaining 10%, most of them are silver or gray. I think I've seen one red one in person, ever.

If I end up buying a GR86, better believe it'll be Neptune Blue. As to the Z, none of the colors are very interesting IMO. The yellow is too soft, the blue is too inoffensive and dark and the red doesn't pop at all.

You're misremembering. Z32 TT was ~3600 lb.
https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...mparison-test/
The Z rides on a 96.5-inch wheelbase and measures 169.5 inches from nose to tail. It doesn't look it, but it's a hefty car, weighing 3570 pounds—about 200 pounds more than a Corvette.

Yeah, it was a porker, about same weight as the new one funnily enough.
