In theory, you are supposed to keep them on their sides so the cork stays hydrated from contact with the wine. Otherwise, the cork dries out, too much air gets in and you end up with expensive vinegar. There are experts that debunk that though and say the air in the bottle is so humid as the wine tries to evaporate, it takes care of itself. The wine would go bad at about the same rate either way. It's more about the surroundings where it is kept.

For example, wine (mostly champagne) brought up from the Titanic was supposedly still very good even though it had been haphazardly stored on the bottom of the ocean for 70 years.

Me, well all wine tastes the same, and I have no interest.

I became a wine snob accidentally. Since that experience twenty five years ago, nothing I've tasted has come close. It's a good thing that I don't care. Just interesting. Tcoat and Ho have heard me tell the story. I may even have written about it here.

I haven't heard the story, so what is it?

Let me guess, 25 years ago, you were in a restaurant in NYC when the table next to you got upset and a bottle of wine and a plate of chicken wings fell on the floor. You were sopping up the wine off the floor with the chicken wings when you noticed the label on the wine bottle -

I've had about a dozen 1963 vintage ports over the last 10 years, and I've dug out corks in pieces where I thought, " now the hell is there any wine in this bottle? ". Always incredible wine.

If I had money to waste, I would so buy and drink this..
