Setting aside the political world for a moment, I think euro 7 standards is the more concrete issue in having the 2nd gen go too far. The US tends to follow and without those two markets it's hard to sell a whole lot of Cars much less an affordable sports car.

Haha, partial zero, that's a new concept for me. Might need to start using that term
On a serious note, Boxers do have many drawbacks, the exhaust side is tight and really hard to fit close coupled catalysts for fast heating with compact exhaust manifolds. Active valve train stuff is also very expensive since many things needs to be done twice. And the packaging is pretty rubbish for making modern turbo charged engines, even though they did some good improvements lately.

Subaru's explanation of it is marketing at it's very finest! "The Subaru PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) is the affordable, no-compromise, eco-friendly alternative. Although the Subaru PZEV runs on regular unleaded fuel, it offers significant smog-reducing environmental benefits and delivers equal performance compared to non-PZEV cars or SUVs, including hybrids, diesels and alternative fuel vehicles. A PZEV is classified as the cleanest-running gasoline-powered car on the market and was developed to meet the air quality standards of California, the most stringent in North America. A PZEV must meet the Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV) tailpipe standard and have zero evaporative emissions."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partia...ssions_vehicle On that note, every time I see "zero emissions" written about a car (e.g. popular license plate placeholder on Teslas back in the day), it makes me cringe. Sorry, there's no such thing as "zero emissions"! Just making a car on a factory already involves emissions. Recycling it will also involve emissions. Brake dust and tire rubber wear should be considered "emissions" as well, if you ask me. |

What market is the MR2 EV targeting and when does it come out?
If the MR2 is meant to be 86-size with a sub-$40K starting price, 250 miles of range, and at least 300hp, and it destroys BRZ and GR86 sales, then they might end production sooner than later. But reasons why it might survive longer is that the S650 Mustang and 400Z are only now coming out and both are sticking with ICEs, while at the same time the Camaro and Challenge are going EV, and maybe even the Miata is going EV (rumored). So if people really aren't onboard with those cars going EV (or the range or cost suck), maybe you see people going with the GR86 or BRZ, which keeps it alive for longer. I think a lot of us agree some form of hybridization is likely to come along at some point, which is a good sign for longevity, but I wouldn't expect more than a .5kwh battery and a small "e-boost" motor on the transmission adding like 20 hp and torque for very short periods of time. |

Can we expect a new MR2 in next 2-3 years? Or something Sports EV that shown on electric car announcement by toyota recently. That yellowish small sports EV concept own my heart.

i really think we're going to see that 2035 'deadline' shift again. it's a cute fuzzy concept, but with the current chip shortage that's also going to effect charger components, it's going to be a lot harder to get the chargers out and accessible enough for many to justify.
i also think we're going to see more hardcore ev mandates after 2035, while used ICE vehicles start climbing in values for about 5-10 years after. for all the "ya'll ain't takin' mah car!!" crowd.

https://pressroom.toyota.com/leading...rified-future/ "Toyota’s commitment to offer an electrified version of nearly all vehicle models in the Toyota lineup by around 2025." Electrified means Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid, BEV, and FCEV. They've also always said "version" which means gasoline only models will still be around for a while.
