My guess is there will be 25 idiots that pay it!

Can't wait to see this truck on Cars&Bids with 6 miles and ready to be auctioned. Comment section will be fun.

Am I reading it right if I conclude that any buyer not willing to commit to this -atrocious- market adjustment, but who have already paid an initial deposit will lose it?

No, well not exactly. Anyone with a reservation had to name a dealer at the time of the reservation but it is my understanding the reservation is portable, you can change the dealer before putting down a down payment to one with a more reasonable policy. At least according to the article there are plenty of dealers that have stated they will sell the Lightning for MSRP.

This particular dealer is making the down payment nonrefundable but that does not mean all dealers are doing that.

If you want the 300 mile battery, you have to pay $74K for the XLT Trim.

https://www.motortrend.com/news/2022...-configurator/

So you are looking at $100K+ with the $30K markup. $84K with the 10K markup.

Looks like Ford is cracking down on dealers in the US like the one above insisting on additional down payments and absurd ADM. They are saying dealers caught doing this will potentially not receive any allocation of the Lightning.

At the same time they are encouraging dealers to include the "can't sell for a year" clause in the sales agreements to prevent consumers from flipping them. They did this with the GT, and apparently it is legally enforceable.

Good for Ford. I like that the warning includes language on how they are competing with direct to consumer models and that this won't help Ford's or the dealers images.

I'd much rather order directly from Ford or GM, but have no problem using a dealer as long as they don't pull stupid dealer tricks in the process. Never paid ADM on anything and not going to start now. There has never been a car I wanted so bad I'm going to play that game.

really mixed feelings on the whole 'can't sell for a year' clause. i get why it's there, but it just staves off the flippers for 1 year only.

Yea, I'm the same but I could see where it could help some in this case. The first units are going to come out at a glacial pace (for Ford) leading to a market ripe for flipping which makes it more difficult to keep the dealerships under control. By model year two they are saying they'll be building 150,000 units a year, which will make price gouging/flipping almost impossible.

The 1 year language is optional by the way, Ford isn't requiring their dealers to do it.

It was different with the GT since it was never going into mass production. I really never understood why Ford cared there.

i didn't either. the gt imo, became a flop. they limited production and then required people to apply for it-- i know it was so that they could try to improve brand awareness, but there's so many better ways to raise brand awareness than sell to people that can afford it, and then rely on them to make a video about it. it was a repeat of "trickle down economics"...

if they had instead chosen to rent out 10 gt's for cheap on turo for a couple weeks, or sponsor some track days to get people behind the wheel of 10 of them, it would've done just as much brand ambassadorship as the entire production run did for the first year, and likely at much less cost, with tighter control over the scenario's the cars were used in.

i don't care if some rich dude buys a new car.

but you can bet i'm watching the video if a middle school english teacher that just had a blown out radiator gets her taurus rental upgraded to a ford gt for the week...

Frankly, I get the "brand awareness" that the GT, NSX and LFA bring to the OEMs, but it means nothing to me. It's like they are saying "here's what we could do if we cared enough to produce a sports car".

GM does it right with the Corvette. It's the "damn skippy we can do this, and we are going to build them at a price point no one else can. Come get it if you want it". I've known someone in every age group that has owned a Corvette, high school to senior citizen, because they are out there. I've also seen plenty with over 100K miles on them, and at least one had over 700K miles on it.

That's the way to do a sports car.
