For me it was strictly pricing. The BRZ in Canada costs $2,500 less than the GR86 and I also get a discount for being part of a club that has ties to Subaru so I'm saving almost $3,300 by going with the BRZ.

Yes, the GR86 front end looks better and yes the duck tail is a more aggressive nuance but that's all aesthetics.

Performance wise, its annoying that the BRZ is allegedly more tame at the limit but with a proper NON-OEM alignment and stickier tires, I'm sure I can dial the front-to-rear grip balance to something more of my taste. That was going to happen regardless of which brand I bought so ... whatever.

I didn't care which one I got. I went with BRZ because I could get it sooner and since I have owned 11 Subarus and 2 currently I got 1500 off MZRP and an extra 750 loyalty. Plus I got 1.89 interest for 72 months with taxes thrown into the loan. If Toyota could have done all that I would have gone with them.

In my experience, Subaru is easier to deal with as a company. They’re the ones who designed and built the car and as a smaller company, I’d prefer to support them. Also more confident that Subaru techs will have more experience working on boxer engines vs hoping the “right” Toyota guy touches it.

Ordering from my Subaru dealer was a piece of cake, will post more about my experience after I get the car in a week or two.

The ability to factory order one + the reports that the BRZ is a little more livable on the street than the 86 is what swayed me.

Its hard to state one without the other.

For the BRZ the chassis geometry is more evolved, lighter, with an ever lower centre of gravity than the GR86.

For the GR86 there is a more evolved state of chassis tuning.

I wish the front bumper wasn't such a big deal to me. Also I like the "pavement" dark grey color Toyota offers. It would be sooo much easier dealing with the Subaru dealer near my house. I might call them tomorrow and ask how pricing, ordering, and pick up work out compared to the Toyota dealer in Denver.

Over here (on a gen1) weirdly enough the insurance rates were significantly lower for the 86. Is that a factor over there?

I feel like we're going back in time here. Same as when we first had FR-S/BRZ and people were discussing which one was better. Then it was 86/BRZ.

To be faaaaiiiiiirrrrr 1% is very negligible and appeal is a matter of personal choice. As the great Jeremy Clarkson once said, the best way to pick between the 86/BRZ is to play a good game of eeny meenie, mynie, mo.



The main reason as to why some people are choosing either/or, at least for now, is a matter of availability/convenience, because of our inherent need to have the latest and greatest even if it means settling in for the second best choice, whatever that one might be. It has been the same for me over the computer world.

For sure. But for me, after spending the time to do the research and coming from shifter karts and other forms of racing, i always look for linear. Again, it might be very minor to many but I had the time to wait and originally wanted the GR86. Even just for cooler logos. But this time it's not that simple. Bottom line, if I bought a GR86 then found out about the BRZ parts, I'd be annoyed a bit. Maybe not anyone else but I would be.

In reality, for the average driver, if you were able to remove all branding so someone didn't know which one they were driving, they probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Buy the one with bumper you like more and move on. The aluminum knuckles and rear sway mounts aren't really a big deal.
