When I was a young bachelor many year ago I had 2 orange tabby cats and 3 decent sized aquariums in my apartment. One morning I was laying in bed and heard a "kerplunk". Looking up at the dresser which had a 25 or 30 gallon deep profile aquarium on top of it (I know that was crazy), one cat had walked on top and the cover gave way, completely submerging the cat in the water. He pulled himself out very quickly, shook himself off and carried on with his business as though nothing had happened.

They are interesting and often misunderstood animals to most people. And since they can reproduce like rabbits, there are always litters of kittens that need to find homes.
As compatible as they are for living with humans, they are so much different from dogs. Maybe not quite as intelligent all around, but if you understand their instincts and natural behaviors they are fascinating and they can really show a preference for the specific people they like to be with.

I really liked the early episodes. The latest ones not so much. I think it's time has come.

A lot of a cat's personality is based completely upon how it was raised when young.
The mostly white one was born in our house to a rescue mother (my son kept her) and is much more of a dog type personality than what people think of as a cat type. He is now 10 and doesn't misbehave much anymore.

The mostly black one was a feral kitten that was living under our side deck that we caught and brought in. My son took one of his brothers and the rest went to a rescue shelter. He is pretty much still a kitten and hasn't settled on his life personality yet but he is much more what people think of when you say "cat". You never ever EVER know what he will be up to next.

Both are very very intelligent and smarter than most dogs I know. It is just a different type of smart!

Now... The white ones sister (we had to get rid of her last year due to serous territorial issues) was as dumb as a stump.

We got our cat when she was approx 2 weeks old. It was found with a litter of 5 in a barn on a trailer park. She was so tiny that she could fit in the palm of my hand. We bottle fed her, had to stimulate things for her to pee or poo, and gave her our undivided attention for the following weeks. Our dog loved her.

Over the past years since we've had her, she gets her nice moments, she'll come lay down with you and just sit on your lap. We get about 30 seconds of petting before her claws come out.

She does not like visitors. At all. Even when my parents spent a full month in the house, she would still hiss and go for the feet.

She does like to sleep by my feet on the bed, which is nice. She also greets me everyday after coming home from work with a hug (She stands up on my legs and extends her arms for me to pick her up and put her against my shoulder). Once she says hi she will start biting and then I know she's like "Hi dad, I missed you, now fck off".

My comment that dogs are smarter than cats is partially based scientific data indicating that the number of neurons in the cerebral cortex of cats is about 40% less than dogs, so they probably have that much less thinking potential. Still, considering a typical domestic cats brain weighs 1 oz (yeah, I know that sounds crazy), they are pretty intelligent.

Elephants are one of the most intelligent animals. One profound difference is their self awareness. As a demonstration, if you put a smear on an elephant's forehead they will wipe it off using their trunks when they encounter it in their reflection a mirror. Other animals don't recognize their reflections as being their own.

We simply evolved differently. How we ended up astronomically smarter than the next species down eludes me. Perhaps as a warlike species, any, species potentially rivalling humans was simply dominated to extinction as Neandertals likely were.

Intelligence in vertebrates is roughly associated with brain to body size ratio. Elephants have a larger brain than humans, but we are significantly more intelligent. Well we think we are anyway...

Brain size is a false data point. A raven or crow can recognize individuals and hold grudges against certain people, use tools to get to food and solve complex puzzles. There brain is about the size of a peanut.

Some of the dumbest dogs I have ever seen are big ones.

Neandertals had significantly larger brains than Sapiens so that is a bad example. Their quasi extinction was far more likely due to climate change and their inability to adapt than warfare wit Sapiens.

Size and number of neurons is only one of many factors on how brains are wired and really don't mean much in the big picture. If you could answer why humans are so much smarter then you would be very famous!
