This may not affect performance pack Brembos.

Can you elaborate? Why does it work for Brembos, but not AP? I presume AP will work with GR86 though? |

I have a 2013 with the original steel knuckles and run the Essex Sprint AP kit, I purchased the 2022 Aluminum knuckles (for the weight savings) and started the install tonight. An OEM caliper will bolt to the aluminum knuckles in the same fashion as the steel knuckles (and previously documented to fit). Since the AP kit, and most other aftermarket kits, use a bracket to attach to the knuckle instead of a caliper with the mounting points cast in it. The PP Brembos also use a bracket cast into the caliper in the same fashion as the regular calipers. So it will likely work without issue.
See pics, holes are in the same orientation, but the extra aluminum casting (likely for strength that steel doesn't require) blocks the AP caliper bracket from sitting flush, or in the correct orientation.

So basically there's some extra material added for reinforcement on the aluminum knuckle right where some aftermarket BBKs put their brackets. So likely not an issue on GR86. Those photos are super helpful, thanks a lot! |

Nobody said they're worthless. I (not everybody) responded saying upgraded brakes aren't necessary for track days because with good pads and fluid, they won't fade. I also said and agreed with you that there ARE benefits to better brakes, and even stated I intended on buying an aftermarket kit. But are they absolutely necessary to prevent fading or do a track day? No. |

@trippinbillies40 Are the pads the same size/shape as the gen1? Since the AP kit won't fit I'm suddenly in need of some track pads for the stock caliper.

Hello. New to this forum as i've just bought a shiny new 2022 BRZ which im planning to use as a dedicated track car. I haven't owned any previous gen BRZ/86s.
Reading through this thread im a little unclear if peoples opinions are based on the previous gen or the new one.. So I was wondering if anyone has heavily tracked their 2022 models yet with the stock calipers and rotor size, and if so, how are they holding up? I want to figure out whether I can get away with just a rotor/pad/fluid/lines upgrade rather than a BBK. I notice the new model has built in ducting where the old model didn't. That's pretty much the limit of my knowledge

I doubt anyone has had a chance to really heavily track the current one. Unless you are super fast on a track that is hard on brakes there is enough stopping power with upgraded pads and fluid. That said the arguments for a BBK are only slightly different than the first gen assuming you are not adding a turbo or supercharger. Gen 2 has slightly more power but better airflow so thermal management is probably a wash when it comes to pad temps. That leaves the primary argument for a BBK to be a financial one. I can't remember who did the math but if you track a LOT then a BBK pays for itself in consumables after a certain number of days simply because you go through pads/rotors less quickly. |

I'm a mid-strong level amateur/club racer (lots of guys still faster than me!). This car is going to be used for practice and tuition. The tracks in SoCal aren't particularly hard on brakes but I have managed to cook a couple of high-hp street car brakes to failure on them in the past. The right pads and fresh DOT4 or DOT5.1 (but NOT DOT5!) fluid should work fine. Shouldn't be any need for aftermarket rotors and brake lines.
