I think it is more the black on black doing the heavy lifting.

Agree. And the cherry blossom is gross. All I think of is Nissan and how they just tart up their "Nismo" models with a bunch of red striping everywhere.

Looks tacky.

Subaru's been doing that a while in Japan already. Even for our cars for the STI aero there's been cherry blossom extra pieces you could get that attach to the lip, etc.

Not sure if it is just the weird angles it was shot at but it does look much better than some of the other pictures.
It was looking a little family sedan bland.

2022 Subaru WRX Spy Shots via Car and Driver

Subaru’s photography team has really botched the promo shots for both the BRZ and the WRX. Both look much better in candid/amateur shots than the official material. Maybe they don’t know how to shoot stuff with less than 7” ground clearance.

Well aware. For the last decade, I’ve owned Subarus, along with the FRS and 86. It’s gross. Especially when it’s done that excessively

There's just something really strange with the trim pieces on the rear corners with the reflectors. I'm trying to imagine what the rear would look like if those were gone but it'd still have weird proportions.

Only in black to "hide" the ugly black plastic wheel arches .

Be OK if it was actually red. The Cherry Blossom always looks like it is 15 years old and faded out from exposure.

But is SHOULD be chunky. The WRX/STi should look aggressive. They need to be industrial, almost agricultural (tractor like) in styling to stand out. Pretty much every complaint I have about the new BRZ should be used on the WRX. Even the plastic cladding around the wheels works in the design as it adds some aggression to the areas.
Otherwise it is just an Impreza with a scoop and blends in with every other aggressively bumpered econobox sedan out there.

I actually like the cherry blossom accents on the black car, but it wouldn’t work as well with a different color I think.
