Edit: NVM, I read further into the article and no Manual Trans. F- that.

A really good performance oriented CVT would be such an advantage that F1 banned it way way way back when Williams was developing it for their dominant F1 cars in the early/mid 90s.

I drove a Formula 440 with a 2-stroke engine and CVT at Road Atlanta way back when. FUN as hell! But the sound was fuggin WRONG! Constant-rpm drone does not sound great, even though you can maintain revs at peak power rpm...

I think the problem with CVT for the street is mainly response time. You aren't always looking for power on the street, and a CVT can't suddenly be in a different ratio when you want it to be.

I think a separate power lever might be a bit much for your average driver, and might make getting a good efficiency rating difficult. Not entirely sure how the test would handle that feature...

Ironically, Subaru does not install the performance oriented CVT on the BRZ. It would make more sense and it could offer a performance advantage, but they never took this platform too seriously. They install it on their AWD cars where you can have off-roading scenarios with excessive wheel spin. The only way to avoid in such cases slipping the belt over the cone and destroy the transmission, is to cut the power down and stop the car to actually spin its tires which is terrible for off-road!

They didn’t put it in the BRZ because it’s designed as a transaxle.

It is a kind of excuse when you don't want to design a smaller transmission case without the differential or even better move the whole transaxle at the back which would give also a better F/R weight distribution. Or should I say better that they didn't want to share any CVT technology with Toyota? Probably they left with a bitter experience when working on the GM's Saab-Impreza 9-2x project and they didn't want to go through the same.

Oh yeah, everyone would consider a CVT a huge strike against the BRZ even if it was good. There is demand for actual gears and the Aisin unit is a Toyota part also used in the IS Lexus iirc. Also the rear diff.

Don't forget this car was a collaboration with Toyota.

STI will remain manual Trans only. WRX drivers are sometimes not manual drivers. WRX also doesn't have an LSD anywhere. It's not as performance oriented. Hence the rev hang and my averaging 9.9 l/100 km over 3 years in my 2015 WRX driving fairly aggressively.

Performance parts, LSDs, Brembos, adjustable centre diff, inverted struts etc all costs more money.
You want a car better optimized for off road traction then there's the STI.
Complaining a lesser model is less optimized for that purpose? Oh I forgot, you always complain as the resident nit picker. Lol

The 2011 WRX 5 speed I had was a beast after a Cobb off the shelf tune. No rev hang (emissions), and 2nd gear to 100 km. But no LSDs or Brembos or STI struts.

Every model had its pluses and minuses.

Come on Subaru.
The car that should be sleek and smooth you stick Art Deco fender vents and running boards on.
The car that should be chunky with nice industrial lumps and bumps on it you tone down to nothing.
Appearance wise it is just an Impreza with a hood scoop.

Just sad see them converting to a SUV company like many others. Why to make WRX looking like a Crosstrek ?

My guess would be that consumer surveys determined that people found the big fender flares and fender vents a bit too boy racer for mainstream buyers. Australians want AWD, but perhaps this wagon needs to fit a broader demographic than an STI would.

It's toned down, which seems appropriate for more mature buyers.

I'm in my 50's, but I still took the optional trunk wing when ordering my STI. Why not, people can laugh all they want but my car actually generates rear downforce at highway speed, making is slightly more stable. The tradeoff? Increased drag and some people rolling their eyes at the "ricewing". Subaru was FHI which was originally Nakajima, so they have a history with wings.
In fact, I saw a kamikaze plane (no landing gear) built by Nakajima right at the end of the war. This particular one is in the Pima Air and Space museum in Tucson. Fortunately, although Nakajima was commissioned to build this, they were never deployed. Mitsubishi, on the other hand, provided most of the aircraft for the war including the Zero fighters.

Huh, that actually looks rather acceptable in black with the cherry blossom skirts.
