If you are not familiar with autocross, there are classing rules that you must abide by, or risk disqualification or being placed into another class.

For the competitive - they pay attention to this and take every advantage they can. So, its far from modding for the sake of modding, its making specific changes to stay competitive. Milliseconds matter.

Depends on your goals.

For example, eliminating the fender gap. I anticipate a lot of people who already have coilovers and wheels/tires on their 1st gen cars to transfer those on the 2nd gen cars shortly after getting those.

So is the fender gap still there? I was reading people here saying that new car's suspension is lower, because cog was lower too ...

Car is not lowered when compared to gen1, ground clearance increased. Also, total height decreased and CG lowered a little bit

Do you mean of pre-production cars? Most photos are shooted by certain angles and the rest are photoshop 'ed by the journalists .

cog is lower but it's millimeters lower.

there is not a significant difference caused by the springs in the overall cog

Yep.

Its 1.5mm lower for the GR86, 4mm lower for the BRZ.

Too bad they didn't fix the fender gap. Main issue is not the suspension, but the diameter of the wheels which are quite small. Other manufacturers are offering much larger wheels with the expense of a longer gear ratio, but if factory kept the previous 4.3 final drive ratio it wouldn't be noticeable at all. With a larger wheel the suspension would have to be redesigned a bit to keep the vehicle height same, BUT overall it would be better than to have this ugly gap and use again old coilover solutions with the lose of suspension travel.

Well, the real issue is they made the wheel well to fit larger wheels/tires because they knew folks would change them out.

Frankly I don't find a drop much of a solution because all it does is close the gap at the top. I'd rather have the symmetrical gap than no gap at the top and a wide one at the bottom.

If If were going to "fix" it, I would go with larger (more sidewall) tires rather than larger wheels. Since mine is primarily a road car, I would hope it would help soften the ride a bit, plus I HATE low profile tires.
