I thought this has been the case even since Scion? I seem to remember years ago (lol wow) when I was first looking around 2014 or so that SWP was an option.
Maybe I'm misremembering.

The surcharge actually went up, in 2012 it was $220 for whiteout.
Proof that Toyota clearly charges it for extra profit because Subaru has never charged extra cost for the same exact paint.

Inflation happened I guess lol. Hopefully my Toyota rep can just get rid of the pricing via discounts.

What value do we place on the duck(butt) spoiler? The Premium starts $200 less than the BRZ, and you get the spoiler. If you go white/ red, you are paying a $295 premium above the BRZ, but still with that spoiler To me it looks like a wash, or even a great value, depending what what the GR duck(butt) spoiler costs painted and installed. |

There’s the look (bumper and black accents around), the silver instead of red inside, and the biggest thing to me is the better looking startup sequence in the gauge cluster hahaha. If I’m gonna see that every day then might as well go for the one I like better. To be honest, I’m still not going to make a decision until I’ve got behind the wheel of both. But at this point I’m leaning heavily toward GR 86.

Also my Toyota dealership hasn’t seen anything yet this morning for build slots/allocations.
Apparently there was some kind of GR 86 workshop though?

Keep in mind the Toyota has iron front knuckles and the old rear sway bar design. If anything it SHOULD be cheaper.

That makes sense especially with Toyota already charging $495 extra for paint that doesn’t necessarily cost more to produce.
Although I doubt they are doing that to save costs. They don’t even make the car in a factory they own. The way I see it, they’re going to change those out in preceding model years.

The thing with the old/new sway bar design, it's hard to say if one or the other is preferred. It may not be a case of money savings, but more toyota believes in the older design... Countless performance cars have had subframe sway bars. Joe schmoes online can't say one is objectively better than the other.

There's a third option: disable the startup sequence altogether. But I'm with you on the other points about GR 86 vs BRZ Quote:
@trippinbillies40 hasn't confirmed whether old sway bars fit in his 2022 BRZ yet, but at the very least the Mann Engineering one definitely won't fit. If you do need to buy different rear sway bars and the old ones don't fit, you may end up a) waiting for quite a while to get just the right one and b) paying some extra for them. As for the knuckles... I believe they provide only 3 lbs of weight savings per side, 6 lbs total? I don't think that's going to make any noticeable difference. |
