Good to know. Next time I rebuild an engine I will ignore the service manual and skip the dingle berries.

But yes you are right, they are there for a reason. To seat the rings during break-in. If they lasted the full life of the engine they would continue to eat at the rings.

Huh?

You need a new service manual if you think cross hatching's job is only to seat rings....and I hope you're just a shade tree and not a professional

I’m not saying that it’s the only reason. Break in is one of them though. The abrasiveness of a fresh hone drops with time. You said it yourself, just because you can’t feel them with you fingers doesn’t mean they aren’t there. They obviously can’t keep the same level of abrasiveness indefinitely. No I am not a professional mechanic but I think just about everyone with elementary level of education knows that when you rub steel over steel something is going to wear.

Looked great. Later went on their website and saw they have a $1950 markup on it. Ouch.

WRB is a very special paint, it goes through the rally temples of the world before it gets a blessing to be applied..

Right- specific tolerances are built into blueprinting a motor. The cylinder wall to ring to piston skirt tolerances are designed in mind to retain crosshatching a long as possible to help with oil flow up the wall

All I'm saying is your explanation of rings wearing away cross hatching is wrong....it should never be worn away by rings. If it is, tolerances we're too tight in a rebuilt motor and you will at some point have wall scoring with heat cycles..... especially if you get in a cold car and redline it near instantly.
