There are exceptions. My father-in-law worked for 3 different car dealerships over 25 years, a Buick/Olds dealer in DC, Chevy dealer in Florida and a Honda dealer in Atlanta.

He ended up being the top salesmen in each of those dealerships because of the relationships he had with his customers. There were people that bought Buicks from him in DC that later bought Hondas from him in Atlanta, driving to get them. There were even more Florida customers that came to Georgia to buy from him.

Thing is, while he knew the specs of the cars he was selling, he was not a car guy, he was just a really good salesman.

Yes. Mid '80s until about 5 years ago.

I am so out of shape, I am actually sore from hunting this weekend. I did put in over 40 miles of hiking, but still.

My wife earned her GM Sales Masters award title in just her first 10 months selling cars. It was a small GM store in a small community but it did bigger numbers than many of the big stores in large cities. This was back in 1984. But it's been the same throughout her careers. She started in camera stores. She won top awards and worked her way up to managing three outlets in two cities. She has worked for four major auto makers and won top awards from each of them as well. I've lost count of how many times she has made Ford's "Summit Awards". (That's for being in the top 10% of her category) However I know she has won "Peak" four times. (That's for being #1)

She has been successful because she treats all her customers the same. There are no colours, religions or sexes. She sees only people who need her help. You've all heard of the "Golden Rule", right? Well, she learned the "Platinum Rule" from my father. That is; She always treats her customers the way they want to be treated. (That's different from treating them the way she would want to be treated.)

My old heart throb from back in the day, brings to mind the lyric from the old song sung by Joe Duffie "She walks into Smokey's one hip at a time".

Nope not too much going on in Puyallup today -

Reminds me of the time, back in the 60s, living in San Jose, a good friend of mind's wife called me to go over to Los Banos with her to fix an irrigation pump that was supposed to be keeping the fields around their duck club flooded. Her husband was in China on a business trip at the time.

Have I told this story before? Oh, my ...... I reckon it's best I don't tell it - again?

I know better than to interrupt an old man telling a story. Sometimes it's all they got left!

My grandfather has a story of each of us grandkids. Whenever we see him, he always works it into the conversation.

Mine is that his fridge kept freezing up, so he'd have to ram a screwdriver into the fins in the back to break up the ice. Finally got sick of it, and got a new fridge. I called him right as the delivery guys were there to get the old fridge. Installed a revise drain tube kit, and it's been working fine ever since. He doesn't know it, but I also straightened out all the fins he messed up...

My brothers story is about the time my grandparents, my brother, and his then-girlfriend of 2 weeks, now-wife, drove out to Ohio for a specifically optioned jeep Patriot 5-speed.

Funniest part of that story is how he bitched and moaned for the entire week leading up to it about how ridiculous and stupid and a waste of gas it was, and "to be going with a girl he hardly knows!" (They'd been talking for about 4 months prior)
