i like the exterior of the rivian. it's different, but the rear bar tail light is something i've been thinking about how to accomplish the processes for a decade or so to any pickup truck.

the interior looks like an ikea.

Well, the interior use of materials and design looks great and very well thought out. Better than most. Look closer in case you missed it. Real wood. Contoured surfaces. Depth. Nice contrasting materials and colors instead of most monochrome interiors. And the exterior is easily recognizable for a reason. Tesla did the same thing with the Model S intensionally making it a recognizable GT shape like Aston Martins and Jaguars said Musk. The shape is simple, timeless based on the need to develop a concept and not know when it would launch. The headlights and taillights are unique enough to the brand that the car will be acceptable while staying forward enough to also last this development and first gen phase. It all seems very well played.

The Cybertruck is a lazy design or it is genius, depending on who you talk to. The legacy brands are all playing it safe and boring and are lazy, or they really know what consumer’s want, depending on who you talk to. I don’t believe Rivian’s designers were just being lazy or that the exterior was just an afterthought designed in a rush or whatever, but I guess that perspective depends on who you are talk to.

My parents had a boat that my brother now has. Real wood doesn't do sunlight very well. Or oils from ones hands

That's where we differ. I think the interior looks impractical, too minimized and more art than practical. I don't care about real wood, contoured surfaces and contrasting colors when I have to use a touchscreen to change the angle of my air vents.

I wouldn't buy a Model 3 (or most of Tesla's "look how cute we can be" form factor) for the very same reason.

The Tesla S looks as much as an Aston/jag than I look like Brad Pitt.

Detailwork maybe, but still a stretch. The Astons and jags are actually proportioned nicely. All Teslas look look like pregnant eggs with LED headlights.

Yea, but when you do, do you want it buried 4 menus deep in the "not frequently used" function area?

In our family car we are adjusting them all the time because someone is always too hot, too cold or just right in a way dual zones just doesn't fix.

Well, Henrik Fisker was the lead designer on the Model S before things got complicated, and he left, and interestingly, he did design the Aston Martin DB9 and Vantage, so it is reasonable to believe the final design of the Model S was inspired by the shapes that he had already created, or is that still too much of a stretch for you?

Depends on how the UI is set up. On the Tesla, the climate controls are always there at the bottom of the screen, so it isn't four menus deep, and you can adjust the temperature from the steering wheel too. I'm sure Rivian will be similar. Physical controls tend to be easier if they are simple. On my wife's Q5, the same button does multiple things once a function is set, so I have to push the fan button then rotate the dial to adjust the fan speed. I tend to set the temperature and fan speed to automatic or one setting and adjust the window constantly because I like fresh air.

KISS (keep it simple stupid) doesnt seem to apply when it comes to trendiness....and when you consolidate everything into the touchscreen.....you now have to deal with all the benefits AND drawbacks of said touchscreen.

All the annoying shit that applies to touchscreen infotainment ONLY is now applied to every function that they put into the touchscreen.

The mere fact that someone, anyone felt the need to post tutorials on how to manage the climate controls in a Tesla (or any car) means its way more complex than it needs to be.

But, in the end, that's why different companies make different style cars, and yes I realize I'm ranting against "progress" here.
