I was under the impression that Toyota and other manufacturers design their cars to meet all safety and regulations for every country, so they don't need to make so many different versions.

I mean - isn't that why they did a face lift on the MK2 concept because of EU pedestrian standards? Seems to me that regulation is impacting the entire design of the car for everyone.

Edit: I know that can't be the case because it wouldn't make too much sense but I didn't expect there to be such huge differences.

Your impression is wrong.

Even emission systems are different between countries.

the rumour mill is already abuzz with tales of ‘kitted’ cars with more like 270bhp on tap. Maybe even turbocharged
I'd like to see a stock turbo 4 w/ 270hp and 2400lbs. If the Cobalt SS is capable of 260hp out of a turbo 4 I don't see why they couldn't do it on the FT-86. Just like how other cars have different models why not have 2 different engines? 2.0 non turbo and a 2.0 turbo? Charge about $3-5k more for the turbo model and everything will balance out.

Yeah I figured. But I don't understand how it can be 300 lbs different...

It adds up. It might not be as bad on the FT as it has in the past because of improvements in lowering the weight of materials without lowering their strength (Steel, etc.).

For the AE86, the Japanese GT-Apex version comes in around 2100lbs. The U.S. GT-S is roughly 2400.

That was before 'world cars' though. I doubt the U.S. version will differ by more than bumpers. Maybe an extra pair of airbags.
