I was texting my parents to make sure her iphone is working (Tuesday, she claim it got hacked, so I had to erase and restore it). So far, don't see any bug to be found and jic did changed all her PW. She was telling me, she'll try to keep her iphone as long as she can. I told her, she'll prob keep that phone for 4~5yrs and prob gotta replaced with a new one or different things. Cuz modern days, no one really uses "phone" to call friends/family anymore. So in 10yrs, phone device in general might be limited and have other device might be coming. She responded "I'm too old for that kind of things" (in Japanese). I lol'ed

Well, you can tell her that has already happened. For the most part the "phone" portion of a cellphone is just another app on the phone, it's not a lot different than using a VOIP app on your PC or laptop.

This raises a philosophical question with me (and I don't know the answer): why does intent matter? If I have a momentary lapse concentrating while driving and plow into some pedestrians killing one/some my punishment is a lot less. This is very different to me deliberately driving into a bunch of people, perhaps an act of terrorism depending on local law. But here's the thing: the end result is the same. Why is one an unfortunate accident but the other a hideous crime?

Why is there a difference between manslaughter and murder?
I don't know.

Well, let's talk about something where nobody dies. If you said something untrue by mistake, versus you lied about that same thing, should other people's reaction be the same?

I would posit... In one case you consider yourself the only thing that matters. As a social creature, this is incompatible with what has made us a successful species.

Are you asking why intent matters if the results are the same?

EDIT:
Unintended consequences
"The road to hell is paved with good intentions"
Unethical science
This are the things that immediately come to mind.

That and the how this is exactly why "equity" is a dangerous path to walk down.

After seeing announcement of new WRX and seeing orange option. All I can think is I wonder @Tcoat is trading his Hakone for this orange

Intent/purpose matters in consequence imo. example you gave of killing the pedestrians. If it wasn't the intent to kill pedestrians then within the law, it'll be giving lesser consequences than person who purposely trying to kill the pedestrians. With that said, even the person wasn't purposely trying to kill the pedestrians, he/she broke some law to get to that point/killing pedestrians (example: playing w the phone, DUI & etc). Of course there might be other none law breaking reasons like driver had a heart attack, seizure or other life threatening event to the driver. Would that get away of killing pedestrians? No, but that's why there's a law of the land & the judge for.

With that said, I feel like we're going off from the main point. My point was, most of the commenters were stating the kid shouldn't be punished cuz he was a kid/minor. Nothing to do with how harsh the punishment, cuz harshness is individual opinion. Cuz he's a kid/minor, shouldn't get away from the consequences/punishments. At least that's how I see it. He will not learn and it's a bad example to the others.

He's such a nice boy with such promise! He made a mistake. You shouldn't ruin his life just because he ruined hers... (Paraphrasing from memory... white frat boy, rape... Somewhat well publicized)
When you know it's wrong and you do it anyway I have little sympathy.

I'm on-board with adjusting punishments to the details... In this case I might have punished the adults severely even though "they didn't break the rules" and the kid less, but I don't know enough to be certain. Same as I might if someone were speeding to the ER with someone needing care.
