Any good reason to stick with 1st Gen?

It used to be the case that a good car would last 10 years. When I bought my 86 I sold my RAV4 to my sister: That thing is 17 years old now and it'll reach 20 no prob.

People didn't drive as much "back in the day" as we do now, that's part of it. There is a reason old odometers only went to 100K. The other part is they weren't nearly as reliable, or if they were they rusted away depending on where you lived. This hasn't been a real issue since the late 70's/80's though.

Every car my family has owned in the last 3 decades has gone well over 200K miles with just regular maintenance and the occasional repair.

Timing chains, lifters, valves, piston rings....you were lucky to get to 100k.

My grandfather never could bring himself to sell his ‘37 Studebaker. It was his first car, and the one that he dated my grandmother with. He was a cook in the army in the early ‘50’s. He says that he drove over the passes to visit her, but never over 45 mph. Those were Blewett and Snowqualmie passes, which I’m sure were pretty sketchy back then. Not surprised that people formed bonds with those cars, the way they had to constantly look after them, and not run them too hard.

Lol. No. He’s actually a pretty lousy cook.

He used to tell a story about a time when he received a mouldy shipment of cheese. Naturally, he threw it out. Later he got in huge trouble for throwing out a ton of fancy blue cheese. He and his brothers grew up in a 10’x10’ shack up in the mountains in eastern Washington. Poor kid had no idea what blue cheese was. At least that’s the way he tells it.

Well it depends on the individual, because even though cars these days are far more reliable, there are still a bunch of things you need to extend their life.

Just always warming the car up, no matter how rushed you are (except in case of emergencies of course) will do wonders for your engines longevity (and other components that like having the oil circulate a little first like the transmission).

If you like to regularly rev the shit out of your car on daily drives (and who doesn't), then also learn to bloody change your own oil! You don't need to do much, just do one extra oil change in between your regular services.

These things make you bond for sure.

Too many 86s made, na Miata and 240sx is closer to what you'll see, both still cheaper then s2000 despite going out of production over a decade before the s2k did.

First sentence is likely true, for original owners. Secondary market I would think would lead to more modding. Heck, some models don't even hit heavy mods until after they are sold used.

As far as number of stock examples left, I think you've got some forum bias there. I'd be willing to bet that as much as 90% of the vehicles built have no to little modifications done to them.

Number of units made have some impact but its not as much as you might think. I mean, Chevy built 243,085 1969 Camaros. Go price one of those sometime.
