Advice on matching plastic body work
Recently bought some rear spats that are unpainted raw ABS. Thing is they are shiny black and was wondering if you guys have any instruction or advice on prepping so it matches the oem rear diffuser color that is not shiny. I know I wont achieve the same texture but that's okay. Pictures for reference!
My guess is to just sand it down so it isn't shiny but just want some advice if there is a different route or something I should know beforehand. Planning to DIY rear spats and see how I do before moving onto side skirts and front lip. Thanks! |

maybe this will work? lightly scuff the surface and then apply.
https://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-26.../dp/B00F87S5KM i used the same paint on my louvers. it was a pain to get it smoothly coated across the entire surface--took about 4 tries, but your piece is a lot smaller.. here's a picture with both parts in the same light, of course the texture is wrong, but the overall light reflectivity is about the same

Hows the quality of the rear spats?
I suppose you could sand down, primer and satin back paint. Or better to aim paint match with front lip and side skirts? |

Do you have a compressor and spray gun?? If so wet sand with 320, prime (dark grey), wet sand again, then spray base and clear.
The challenge is matching the color. When doing my fender garnishes, the first color I got wasn't really right so had to go back to paint shop for an adjustment on the color. Second time was the charm. I'll warn you quality paints can get expensive. Other option may be a wrap,,, but I suck at wrapping.

your imagination is going to be better than reality
![]() this was my old truck. ![]() detailing around those badges is a pain, so i pulled them off and they ended up in the toolbox with everything else that's too good to throw away, but don't have an immediate use for. sometime around the same time, i came out of a hardware store to find 2 older ladies looking at, err, 'visually scouring' my car like someone told them there was a 90% off applebee's coupon hidden in one of the panel gaps, ask them what's up, dreading one of them backed into it or something. they were just trying to figure out what brand and model car it was. i detailed the car shortly after that and rediscovered the ranger badge in the tool box around the same time the subaru badges were getting in the way of the buffer.. i know what the car is. subaru didn't discount the car for me to advertise for them. so some tape and a detail job later, and the brz ranger was born! it's the one detail on the car i get the most amount of questions about
