The 1st Gen has two bumps on the dash and the 2nd Gen only has one…

It’s paid for and it’s fun. I see no reason to buy the new Gen at this time. I also prefer the look of the FR-S over any of the newer models.

i'm not opposed to oled gauge panels. but these are not that. they are BACKLIT LCD panels. meaning that at 11:00 at night, it shoots night vision in the crapper by naturally restricting ones pupils. which is wonderfully great for driving backroads with wild animals that never pop out...

To be fair, many people just have the dash dimmer at max from the moment they buy a car until it goes on the press, they drive at night in clear weather with their fog lights on and have a dash mount with their phone's screen at max bright with their music app open. Combine that with car headlights not being adjusted at the factory (that's supposed to be done at PDI but never is) and night driving is fucked from the onset by headlight aim being all over the place and being blinded by oncoming drivers with headlight aim that is all over the place. I'm not even going to start on people who drive at night on their DRLs.

Yeah maybe you and I have properly aimed lights and turn down the dash dimmer and turn off the radio screen when driving dark roads, but we're in the very tiny minority, people just want to roast their retinas 24/7/365 with as much light as possible.

This is right up there with complaining about the "engine enhancement" speaker. If it's too bright at night, turn the dimmer down. I find the 1st gen dash lights offensively bright at night. I turned them down and don't give it a second thought. The high beam indicator is still a bit bright, but I barely have a chance to use them.

If you plan to mod it heavily, it's less costly to start.

I have a2013 BRZ

54k miles.

Love the retro look and feel. Necked steering wheel, plain dash , unfiltered driving experience (noisy, lumpy ride at low speeds on lumpy roads)

I enjoy high revs and working out the car. And a spare tire

Will I buy Gen 2?

Yeah, when this one hits 12 years or maybe 11.

Definitely before they pull the plug on the last ICE engine.

Or maybe not - depends if this one is holding up well. If the electrics go…. Romance over baby

I bought a sports car to slide around.
If I wanted nice button feel I'd buy a non-90s Porsche.

I am still confused which one I will select even this day if I get an option to buy one new. Extra is always good and probably 2nd gen will be more reliable interms of everything. But that 1st Gen has some iconic vide. I don't know, still confuse me.

have fog lights (might be important if driven year round and in inclement weather)

be riding on 17 inch wheels (may be important if pavement quality is bad vs. 18 inch)
have 4 pot brembos and sasch dampers
The new car *may* have a much more expensive HVAC system to fix, I haven't seen any info that would tell us if it stick to 134a or moves to 1234yf
How about the reliability? not only mechanical but also structure wise, rust proofing, more rigidity.....

I know it is a confusing topic and so do it makes me crazy too. In shorts, I am in a situation that I can keep my 2020 PP GT86 or I can spend just few thousands $$$ to get a brand new 2nd gen. Yes I can easily afford those $$$. But I don't want to regret in future like I did same when I sold my MR2 AW11 and bought SW20. SW20 is great on every prospect but AW11 was so iconic. At least now I am realising.

...but really there is one answer to this. You really like your 1st gen.
I bought my car to autocross and as long as there continues to be a competitive spot for my car, I'll keep it.
Yes, I am in a weird shoes now. I wanted to keep a loving car with me till I die (it is 86 of course) and get an EV once Japanese will start making sporty EV. I love 1st gen so much as well as 2nd gen also. Thats why trying to see what other experts are saying about it.

Homage to the 1960s Toyota 2000GT
Some of the “easter eggs” in Gen 1, subtle nods to the past.

What is different about the rust proofing?

I'm not sure what you mean about reliability in a structural sense. Unless you plan to jump it, it should be fine either way, there are way floppier cars than either gen of 86 out there, and after almost 10 years on the road, it's not like the 1st gen has shown itself to be a rust bucket.

The rest of the 1st gen interior, even on 17+ models, was rattletown filled with crickets on most BRZ/86/Scions I've seen.

Strange, I love the buttons and rotary dials on my '17 PP, and think they look great. WAY better ergos and *feel* than my pristine '11 987.2 (which I sold as I preferred the BRZ). That car's window and hvac switches were *awkward* as hell, the pivot axis is way to high so fingers have no leverage, also they bad "click" feel.

Big fan of the interior switchgear and ergos on my BRZ, and no rattles at 55k miles and ~34 track days so
