What’s the best way to monitor your baby at the track
So I have an iPhone. Check.
I have an OBD2 Scanner with a bluetooth that will talk to my iPhone live on the track. Check. How do you guys post that up so you can see it while your driving? I’m on my 7-8th or so track day so I really need to start monitoring this stuff so I can start watching my temps. Don’t flame me. I know I’m a bit behind the ball at this point I just want a solid way you guy post up your phone or whatever you guys use so you guys can see the way your cars are behaving at when you’re starting to stress it at the track. Thanks as always. |

Honestly, the next best investment I think that does it all with lap timing and car data is an Aim Solo DL. The 1st Gen units come up used often and just by plugging into the OBD port with it and mounting to the windshield with a RAM mount you can get oil temps etc and lap times all on one screen. You get to choose what you want to look at and can customize the screens.
It’s an expensive piece but we’ll worth it if you plan on going further. And if you hate it, they always hold their value and can easily be resold. If you aren’t ready to take that leap. RAM brand mount for the phone is still the best way to keep it stable |

You have 2020 with Android Auto, right?
If you're willing to invest into a cheap rootable Android phone, you can Screen2Auto cast RaceChrono on the head unit, and set up virtual gauges for whatever parameters you want there. Here's the lap timing screen on my head unit: |

In for info.
I have oft but its so big and bulky/heavy and I use Harry Laptimer on my iPhone so that's 2 devices that I need to worry about. Wish I could monitor temps and lap times on my iPhone.

Does HLT still not support custom OBD PIDs?
RaceChrono FTW. |

Racechrono app XGPS160 OBDLink MX+ Way less then what the solo costs, does the same if not more, and don't need to hook to a laptop to see lapping data. I'm ditching my Solo as soon as the new battery for it shows up. Much happier with the racechrono setup.

I really recommend not taking your babies to the track until they’re no longer in car seats.

For engine health, I've found it really helpful datalogging on my OFT at the track. I usually set the main screen to monitor knock correction (KC), with fine learning knock correction (FLKC) and advanced multiplier in the smaller windows. By monitoring knock, I know if I need to back off for whatever reason (large knock events or AM dropping). For example, I can usually see when I've lost or am about to lose a coilpack (increased FLKC above 6000 RPM). I can also review logs to see max oil and coolant temps (or set real-time alarms on the OFT itself).

LOL… It’s hilarious, they keep making me want to take my car seat out every time I go through tech. I keep it back there that way ever time I look in my rearview, I remember to not be an idiot and I need to go home in one piece.

One more question, can I just leave my OBD2 scanner plugged in or do I have to plug and unplug it every time I turn on and off my car?

Depends on which one you use, but the 2 Bluetooth ones I have, you can not leave them plugged in for extended periods of time. For the day, you can leave it plugged in. Leaving it plugged in long term pulls down the battery.

If knock is something you’re interested in monitoring real time (and/or data logging), it’s probably easiest to pick up a cheap used OFT device and find a good way to mount it in your car.
