as I had a 2017 with PP BRZ, i can say that the torque dip on that was a torque BUMP. If you look at the 2017, 205 HP version, the initial torque is kind of huge early on then pauses, creating a difference feeling more than a sad dip.
I raced that mofo'n car around amazingly well. No one in it with me felt it was slow at all. The new version is not as good looking, so i am looking at the Toyota version maybe this time. Still not as retro-singularly cool looking i feel though. a new car is always nicer than an old car so that is justification enough |

No, the car is paid off and recently SC'd so its like having a new car all over. As much as I love this car I couldn't see going into debt again for a similar experience.

I think I'm in the same boat as many people here.
I currently have a 2018, less than 25k miles on it. I like it, but from what I can tell, the second generation seems like a better car. They kept the formula and improved upon it in every way, from small technological upgrades, decent engineering updates and actually having a sensible, matured design. I will wait a few years to see what kinds of special editions they come out with and upgrade either then or during the mid-cycle refresh.

I have a 2013 and am getting up there with mileage (85K), and for me, it's the perfect next step. Kept what I like about the 2013, and improved what I don't

My '17 isn't hurting for power. I'll swap for a kouki GR86 in 2027.
In the mean time I would very much like to obtain a 2020 head unit with android auto because the '17 HU is way shittier than the "torque dip" |

I like how Toyota provided a sluggish first gen auto with no paddles for journalists to drive before they drove the new car. Kinda like a header manufacturer sticking a potato in the exhaust for the "baseline " lol.

All the videos suggested they had access to both first gen autos and manuals to test back to back.

But all the comparisons seems to be with the automatic equipped car...... which makes the difference a little bit more pronounced i think. |

With a potato in the pipe lol. I think the acceleration contests against the miatas were more telling.

nope. new car gains the 1/4 panel wheel well vents i've wanted for forever, as well as the power bump, but it comes attached to an LCD gauge cluster, and an overall more blandly designed vehicle to appeal to the #masses. i went through the phase of having LCD's in my eye's while night driving 10-ish years ago with a carpc, not doing it again with instrumentation that i can't uninstall.

i believe the cluster is married to the ecu for mileage data. so it's not just 'unplug this one and plug this one' in sorta thing. it involves a lot of time in a tech stream, as well as sending stuff off to be re-programmed by specialty shops. and that's just the process of changing a same-year for same-year version...

Nope, would not trade just for the 10% power boost. I would have considered getting the 2023 or later if I liked the design language, but I don't, so I'll be a one and done with the 86.
