@Irace. Love that movie. I haven’t seen the remake, but KR was a good choice to play Klaatu. I wish I could share your optimism, but my sense is the net momentum is in the wrong direction.

Well, from my comments in the Expert Prognosis for the World thread, I share some strong skepticism. I do think there are potential points of no return for things like global warming or species destruction. Of course, we may still survive these things. The end result is still either some type of reoccurring dystopia that we can't escape, or it will move to a utopia. I think we are on the path towards a more enlightened future. There will be ups and downs getting there, but that is the trajectory. It definitely could be that we are marching straight to our demise. AI comes to mind or runaway global warming or something. Given the probability for success and disaster, would anyone predict we would make it this far? We definitely have a precipice approaching. It'll be our moment to grow or to fail. So far, we have seen a movement to grow, and we have those resistant to change and clinging to the past. If we look to our youth, we see a generation that is embracing change and who is more adept at dealing with the issues facing our future. That should give us some confidence and optimism.

I wrote a paper as an undergrad critiquing a school of economic thought. I ended by saying something like, "It can truly be said that the ****** economists have, throughout history, fiddled while Rome burns. While that cannot be forgiven, it can perhaps be explained by their inability to smell the smoke, feel the heat, or see the flames."
I hope you're right and we rise to the occasion. We first have to recognize the approaching cliff. I see signs of among some segments of the population that they get it. It's the segment that insists on putting its fingers in its ears and humming loudly that I think will kill us. Ten or eleven years ago I was more optimistic, but I fear hope is all we have left and it's a slender thread.

Of course they don't. Didn't you see how they did in Mogadishu?
Kidding aside, it doesn't seem like something anyone wants to get

*edit* just read local schools are business are requiring it as the mayor issued the order. Though some places, my gym included, haven't mandated it yet.

I imagine OSHA is going to follow OHA and issue new mandates for businesses soon. They haven't since lifting mask requirements in July.

Far as I know, vaccines are needed for healthcare workers, teachers, San Franciscans who are indoor and Los Angeles is considering the same.
San Francisco to require COVID-19 vaccine proof at indoor venues https://www.pressdemocrat.com/articl...indoor-activi/ Given the effectiveness and safety of the vaccine, I'm sure more businesses are going to do mandates. They are tired of contact tracing and having to send people home for weeks.

Thanks Ultra - I'll pass that along. Heard from him a few minutes ago that the rapid test the Dr ran came back negative. However, based on his symptoms, the results of his home test, and the inability to find another cause, the Dr is almost certain it's Covid. He had a 102 temp and an o2 sat of 96 (on the low side of normal, I read). They sent a specimen to get a PCR test run, but won't hear back until Monday.
I'm going to wait and see. If my buddy's PCR comes back positive I'll go into the Dr and and get a PCR run myself. In the meantime quarantine. I understand your concerns. We have 4 year old and 2 year old grandkids. My wife has decided we're going back into lockdown. Appreciate the good wishes - be careful and stay well.

Had a nice dinner at a fine Italian restaurant for my son's 14th birthday tonight. Being separated with my wife, I haven't been going out much and this is the second dine-in meal since the lockdowns. It felt great and I can't wait for complete normalcy to return.
I am optimistic that in Ontario we will avoid more lockdowns as a result of a 4th wave of unvaccinated hospitalizations. Hopefully the percentage of unvaccinatd left will be almost insignificant soon. I do hope the vaccination %'s get to where they need to be in the US. It's funny how some of the most priviledged people in the world take their good fortune for granted. Meanwhile people in other countries are scrambling to get vaccinated.

OT, but that reminded me of a paper I wrote for one of my undergrad majors. It was the early days of the WWW and from my travels to 3rd world countries, grasped and promoted the concept of remote online learning in the paper.
Hooboy, I didn't think that one through. My professor came unglued. He had a vested interest in graduating more BS Ed. people to feather the nest of his department. My concept was perceived as a direct threat to the status quo so I abandoned it and pumped out some generic boilerplate to soothe the powers that be. A few years later I saw the concept being deployed successfully and fantasized that I could've been the next Fred Smith by ignoring the ideologues, a valuable lesson going forward. |
