Back to what I think was the OP's intent for the thread - cops sometimes do inexplicable stuff. In Texas, hiway patrol (DPS) officers will often camp out in the slow lane going 20 under the speed limit. Invariably, traffic backs up behind them as no one seems willing to pass a police car. I was driving the 250 miles home Friday night, at a GPS measured speed of 77mph (in a 75 mph zone). There was a Muppet camped out in the left lane so I eased into the right lane to go around him. The slow lane was clogged too, so I pulled back in behind Fozzie Bear. About a mile later we came to a rolling chicane set up by a DPS car doing about 15 under the limit. So we all passed the cop doing about 63. As soon as Fozzie got a couple of car lengths ahead of the cop I eased into the right lane in front of the cop and hit the "resume" stalk.
I kept an eye on the mirror and the DPS car switched lanes, got behind Fozzie, lit him up and pulled him over. I have no clue what that was about. Maybe going slow in the last lane?

I've also been pulled over for going too slow in a residential street late at night because it was apparently suspicious.

Weekend before last, I was driving my wife's c300 along a winding two-laner and decided to pass a minivan. After the turbo lag and transmission down-shifting like 20 gears, it shot off like a rocket.
"Wow! This thing really moves! Oh, look. There's a cop." He asked me what my deal was and I completely fessed up. No argument. I was way out of line. A couple minutes later, he LET ME GO! Faith in humanity completely restored. It will take me a while to learn that turbo. Gets out of hand quickly. :/

Last week, I picked my father up at the hospital after a blood test. It's a small town, so a 50 kmh zone leading into a 60 kmh I though. Driving along, pegged at 60 kmh, a police suv pulled up and began riding my bumper of my truck. What's with this guy, I thought. 5 minutes pass and on come the lights. I pull over and the cop comes up to the window. I'm laughing as I say "What can I do for you officer?"
"Is there a reason your driving 60 in an 80 zone?" "An 80, really, he said it was a 60." I said, pointing to my father in the passenger seat, a 74 year old man with super dark, super big, wrap around sun glasses on due to recent cataract surgery. By this time, everyone is pretty much laughing. Cop says, "I had to check to see if you guys were in trouble. Have a good day." "Thanks officer." I imagine with the hospital close by, some people try and drive after some procedures when they shouldn't. Anyway, it was much better than how my traffic stops usually go, as in, how fast do you think you were going? |

Police riding your rear bumper is for the plate scanner. Most police don't actually type in plates into their laptops to run your info, they have cameras in the front of the car that reads the plate automatically. They only follow until the information pops up on their screens.
This is how several big cities are catching people that don't pay fines also, they drive around with a vehicle equipped with side cameras pointing at parked cars on the side of the road, and the system beeps to let them know they found a violator. |

Good luck reading my trucks rear plate like that. Due to a cost saving decision by our provincial government some years ago, newfoundland plates aren't stamped and painted any more. The current plates are printed on thin plastic which is stuck to the metal backing. They flake off like dandruff. 2 of the 6 digits on my plate are in tatters. Still got the registration stickers though. Pretty common in these parts to see hand painted numbering on flaked off plates. New plates are supposed to be free but Covid has the motor registration (DMV) services in person shutdown for good. |
