One of my really old memories is that in preschool I thought I could make a robot (I think, or maybe a hover car, I was into both) using a bunch of cardboard and then the caps of a milk jug, soda bottle, etc., as "dials" with my inspiration being the dials on the laundry machines lol.

Kids have so much creativity.

Where did it all go?

Adults can be pretty creative too. When you don't know how things actually work, anything and everything is possible.

Really, you still have the same creativity, it's just wacky ideas get cut short by reality. Being creative as an adult is all about figuring out how to bend/cheat reality to accommodate your ideas, rather than giving up at "that's ridiculous".

It's there, it just gets hampered by day to day adulthood. If days were 30 hours long I could get so much more done.

I wish... my three oldest grand kids never seemed to have much of anything between their ears when they were younger. No inspiration, no imagination and definitely not willing to put out any effort. If not on a screen it was not for them, period!

I don't know what went wrong. I had such a rich imagination growing up. I used to roll back the living room rug and place books and stuff on the floor. Then cover them with the rug to make hills to race my Dinky Toys over. An old car became a B-17 bomber most Saturday mornings. We always got shot down behind enemy lines around noon and had to bail out. That's when all my buddies would go home for lunch. Then we'd meet up down in the woods and fight our way back home. Even had hand built guns. I had a 50 cal. machine gun on a bipod built out of 2x4's a broken mic boom and some bent alloy TV antenna parts. I used a roll of black electrical tape and 50 rounds of my dad's .303 brass to create an ammo belt.

My dad made me a 700 nitro big game gun out of plywood and an old spring loaded window blind center tube. The photo below shows it part way through it's build. After this photo the stock was stained dark Walnut and the barrel was painted a blue black. A broken kaleidoscope painted flat black was mounted as a 10x scope. A dead bolt, from an old door, was also painted flat black and mounted with a spring inside to give the Bolt Action some realistic feel. I wanted to keep them but when I got older they got recycled. I was so sad.

That's brilliant. Your dad set a pretty high bar.

I was sure that I could make wings by stapling sheets of paper to a couple of 1x2 boards when I was five or six. They looked almost like the real ones my dad had in the workshop.

I vividly remember the complete confidence I had leaping off of our raised porch, and the sheer terror of realizing my mistake. Man, that landing hurt.

I was on a path to do nearly the same thing. I had some cardboard I had saved up from a large refrigerator box, and had carefully studied a couple of model planes to verify the airfoil (thicker in the front, pointy at the back). I then fashioned them to be just a little bit longer than my arms which, based on seconds of engineering study should be about right.

I left them on the back porch prepared for my first launch the next day.

Unfortunately, when I got back from school, my Mother had "mistaken" them for trash and had burned them in our trash pit. With no additional construction materials I was grounded.

I'm still sure it would have worked....

Man, that reminds me of Toy Story when there's a scene of someone wearing Buzz Lightyear "wings" made of boxes. I am almost positive that was something else I wanted to do. I used to play imaginary games where I had a wrist-computer like Buzz too.

why is it so impossible to watch olympic sports other than water and gymnastics without having to hit a paywall every time?

For years, I genuinely thought the Olympics was swimming and gymnastics events only. I never understood why they needed a winter and a summer version when both held events indoors.

Always loved the winter olympics, especially luge, bobsled, and ski jumping. Also dug the various ski events. One of the highlights of my life was being at the 1980.Olympics in Lake Plastered pretty much daily... Even saw the historic hockey game and award ceremony. I had the good fortune to be concertmaster of the orchestra that provided music for that Olympics... It was an amazing thrill. A very different time. Very cherished memories.
