I only wear a mask when required to, which is only medical facilities here*. And I don't go to many of those. I also don't live in an urban area so maybe my situation is different.

*Unvaccinated individuals are still "strongly advised" to wear a mask everywhere, though I doubt that actually happens.

Yeah it's been open here like that. Grocery stores have signage saying they're only required if unvaccinated, etc.

Just a personal choice.

It's odd to me that our overseers are once again toying with ideas that didn't work the first time around. I don't know how doubling down will improve things. Yet we still don't have national standards for COVID mask materials, construction, effectiveness and fit.

What they might take a look at is why so many who get very sick or die outside of the high risk elderly group have one co-morbidity, obesity, according to my PC doctor who is also on the board of a large metro hospital with 2,500 employees. He and his team studied COVID patients throughout 2020 and said those aged 20-60 with a BMI >40 were at the highest risk.

So we have had a large COVID outbreak among the homeless and at the shelters. Many are not vaccinated, but most who are vaccinated have Johnson&Johnson. Probably old news, but the Johnson&Johnson vaccine seems to be only 33% effective against the Delta variant.

Interesting story in this morning's NYT. It mirrors one that showed up in the LA Times recently about the resentment toward the holdouts growing among the vaccinated It seems that more rank and file vaccinated Americans are sick of the refusers and are proposing some of the same and some more draconian consequences we've seen tossed around on here. The key word is "consequences." These folks want there to be serious, negative consequences for what they see as anti-social behavior. Out of pocket payment for covid treatment, job loss, vaccine passports - some more, some less.

It'll be interesting to see where this goes. It may well make vax refuser's lives more uncomfortable. Will they double down or give in? My crystal ball is pretty cloudy at the moment, but I don't think I'd bet on many of them giving in. Many have too much sunk cost in their current positions.

The Cassandra Syndrome
Based on the myth of Cassandra there is a modern syndrome and metaphor recognized by experts; the Cassandra syndrome or complex, which is applied in cases of valid alarms which are disbelieved. The syndrome applies mostly in psychology and politics or science, and it was named by the French Philosopher Gaston Bachelard in 1949.
You're finding out.

I have an employee who's Father passed away yesterday after two weeks on a respirator as a result of COVID. Both his Mother and Father refused to get vaccinated, both came down with COVID. The Mom recovered but the Dad, obviously did not. The Son had been trying to convince them since January to get vaccinated, including making their appointments for them when our Hospital had an initial "family appointments" Fair.

The consequences of not getting vaccinated are real.

That is horrible and a reality for a significant number of people. What can you do, tell these people , "I told you so", as they draw their last breath?

A person lives their entire life avoiding mortal danger. One very poorly informed decision and it's all over.

My father was in a senior residence and I was unable to see him for months. If there was a way I could have taken him out of that place when they had an outbreak he could have avoided infection but nobody in my family had the facility with one floor for him to stay. In the end we were probably in denial that living in a luxury residence at > $5000/month he was still not safe and we were not in a position to protect him on our own.

People that were a bit more sharp mentally, for example retired doctors living there would probably have watched out for themselves somewhat whereas my father was 100% passive in that he did virtually nothing for himself for the most part which probably resulted in his demise.

My nose was a little clogged the other night and I must have slept with my mouth open. Now I have a raspy voice, and scratchy throat. One of my clients immediately asked if I had the Delta variant O_o

That looks great but style wise I preferred the WWI era masks. Little round glass windows for each eye. Extra, ahem, mustard on that hotdog?
