We don't want it to thin the herd, that sounds like wildebeast. Whether people piss you off or not they're still humans.

I understand that, but seriously, why is human life sacrosanct? I'd like to think that I'm more valuable than other lifeforms, but what makes that true? I'm made of the same material as all other animal life forms. As a species we're culpable in countless mass extinctions. We are much more bloodthirsty and brutal than any other species I can think of. Selfish in ways that are unseen in other species. We're in the process of wrecking the planet. It seems to me we're flawed enough on a fundamental level that we've become something of a plague.

I agree. But it is what it is as well... In the US we've had access/opportunity to fix this, on the whole. Worldwide we have a really long way to go. And we all suffer from the consequences in one way iv another.
Except maybe bezos... He's richer than ever as a result.

I'm not a nihilist but wonder if current geopolitics will, instead of wrecking the planet, improve it through attrition? Probably not, history shows it would be rinse and repeat.

Unless you're a billionaire hiding out in your New Zealand bunker waiting for their Singularity hoping the Maoris don't arrive first.

In other news, a study published in a reputable journal yesterday suggests that the current vaccines are 88% effective against the delta variant.

FWIW, I didn't search their methodology or financing not that I'd understand it anyway.

I don't think we humans are a plague, but we definitely have the ability to be our own worse enemy. The planet will survive with or without us, it's ecosystem may just be different, that's all.

The biggest fault with humanity is we have evolved to be intelligent enough to remove ourselves from evolution and natural selection.

Even things that are inherently good, like vaccines, impact that. Saving babies with debilitating or crippling diseases or deformities and, on the flip side, aborting 40M babies a year globally does that, not to mention birth control which has the same effect (I'm not saying these are good or bad, it's just a contributing factor).

Basically, except for huge natural disasters or man made atrocities we are probably 90% outside the natural processes that got us to this level.

Ultimately though, "Nature" wins.

The Darwinian thing went out the window for humans as soon as they were able to 3D print themselves a set of wings.

Sadly, the process of natural selection does take place with humans still, except rather than the ability to thrive in a predator/prey situation it's become economic strength. We are trying to overcome this with COVAX for example in the case of Covid19 vaccines but regardless, poorer countries, especially densely populated ones are seeing the most deaths long after the vaccines and effective treatment is widely available elsewhere.
There is a whole lot of world to vaccinate in order to travel freely again.

But really, other than the fact that our intellect has outstripped our judgement, what makes us special - less worthy of "herd culling" than other species?

In Canada it's called The Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Every anti-masker that gets dragged out of a Walmart store cites it.
Reminds me of the time down in Fort Irwin, CA. This slick sleeve (EM, Enlisted Man, with no rank) spouted off to one of my lieutenants, that he could not strike him, because he was an EM (Enlisted Man).

When I came upon the scene the EM was "low crawling" behind the lieutenant. I asked the Lt what had happened and how long that EM had been low crawling. He replied with what the soldier had said he had been low crawling for about 6 hours.

I went over to the other side of the FB (Fire Base) and sent one of my NCOs over to tell the Lt to release the soldier to me. I thought that low crawling thing had gone on long enough, so, I had the NCO put the soldier on a detail to "burn the shitters" for 2 days.

Nope we didn't lay a hand on him -

As a nation we are in the 40% range for vaccination. What Biden is trying to do is to say "get vaccinated and then live normally." What the media is reporting is that Delta infections among the unvaxed are doubling pretty quickly. It's not the media's fault that's happening.

Some want put their heads up their asses and shout "we won, it's over, let's party." Well, it's not over, the fat lady hasn't sung, and we haven't won yet. Putting our fingers in our ears and saying it is doesn't make it true. As has been said many times, we still have a great opportunity to fuck this up. And, somewhere over 50% of my country-persons seem determined to do just that. And THAT's not the media's fault either.
