17+ Intake Box (Not Manifold) vs. Early Models
Hey all. Recently picked up an intake system of a 2020 BRZ to put on by MY16 out of curiosity as I've never seen any real comparison between these systems.
The installation of the system on the 2016 I have was quick and simple, no surprises as it's stock after all. All the attachments to the system (including the 16 snorkel to 17 box) are the same and can be swapped no problem. ![]() After installing, the car certainly felt a bit spunkier, so I figured I'd go out and do some log data logging pulls on these. I went to a (seemingly) flat piece of road in the middle of nowhere and did some 3rd gear pulls. This was all done on the same day, same time, just swapped parts by the side of the road. The snorkel was the 17+ for all runs, not that it probably matters. Also worth noting that the MAF scaling was the original MY16 OFT v4 for all runs. ![]() The main thing to look at here is the slope between these, and you can see that there really isn't hardly any difference between these three. This is in spite of the fact that which runs were uphill and which were downhill are clearly visible (and again, it certainly seemed flat!). Also, the road was bumpy in the middle of the run, which typically shows at around 8 seconds in. Any differences seen I'm going to chalk up to logging weirdness. I had to 'normalize' this data as at nearly the same RPM, same gear the data was saying different speeds, up to 6 MPH different :/ To Summarize: Mad Gains? lolno. But I am sticking with the 2020 intake as, I dunno, maybe it's psychosomatic but it still feels a bit quicker to response and I think it's neat. Even been starting the process of dialing in the MAF scaling for it ![]() As a word to anyone who would consider doing this for the neat factor, I'd skip the snorkel if you have the option. And, if for some reason you're buying new, stick with buying from subaru as it is cheaper (like $200 no snorkel) Also, I did take pictures of all the differences between the parts that make up this system. I kinda figure they'd be pretty boring to add here, but I can post them if anyone cares. |

Interesting. I have a 2015 Fr-s and I tried to install a 2017 (manual) intake box with and aftermarket inlet tube without succes. I would need the inlet to be a few mm longer. I ordered a Perrin 2017 inlet tube but it seem's to be the exact same lenght than the no name brand I have on the 2015 intake.
I could try once again with the oem inlet just to see the difference. I'm trying to get every NA hp available out of the FA20. Thanks for the info and good post! |
