Met a buddy, and on our way back, I found the lighting was just so good. The picture barely does it justice

Backtracking just a little...

May 29th, after 39 years of living on this planet and 22 years of legally driving (26 otherwise), I finally hydroplaned. It was like a weird rollercoaster... and then a backwards rollercoaster... into a guard rail.

So I actually ended up driving home like this when the tow truck didn't show LOL. A long 14 miles going 30mph to be safe.

Tow truck got her the next day.

The shop sent updates as they got along.

I picked her up yesterday! Of course it was pouring all the way to baltimore. I've never been so alert and nervous in this car. This platform has a way of making you more alert but the nervousness was definitely the rain factor. Temps dropped from 100 to 73 in a few minutes and we actually had golfball sized hail when I went to pick up the car.

So to celebrate, since the shop had no idea how to connect the reverse light setup, I took the day off to get that sorted. They cut the wires when removing the bumper so it was fun putting it all back together again.

And I figured while I was at it, might as well hook up the mods that have been laying around.

Dark blue alcantara shift boot with TRD stitching. I ordered this custom from an instagrammer.

And finally used that headlight adapter wiring i put together to make the fender turn signal garnishes plug and play.

So yeah. Been driving a Nissan POS rental for the last month and I'm glad insurance exists. $11k from them and $500 from me

Just goes to show that doing the speed limit on a road that you've driven a million times doesn't mean it'll go well all one million times LOL

You're right about no other cars being involved and how quick it happened. Driving the car in the rain after picking it up actually made me glad for horrible traffic.

Double on the glad you're OK.

As an aside are you going to change the "ATE SIX" plate to "ATE RAIL"? What, too soon??

A friend already suggested I change it to "86'd"

Glad you're OK.
Just wondering, was the traction control on when you hydroplaned? TC has saved me in some pretty hairy rainy situations. It seems to work very well. As long as it's on.

Curious. Nanny mode, or pedal dance? I'm fine bopping in and out of hydro, and am extremely annoyed by the nannys. They throw off my rhythm to the point where it feels dangerous. Queue the flamers. I pedal dance for rain & snow.

edit: haha... I see windsrfr already asked.

This was the first question a smart alec person asked on IG and I've turned off traction control exactly four times ever. Three times to do a single donut and one time to do a 180. All in parking lots. Never while normal driving. I'd say I'm old but everyone here will deny that 39 is old so I'm... aged? And unwilling to turn off nannies. All that said, I don't see how TC would have helped when I was off of the ground but I get the sentiment.

88% Ceramic tint (@50% tinting) goes a long way to keep the interior from turning into a scorching hot shifter.

It wouldn't have. Must've been a long strip of runoff.

Repair looks great!

Out of necessity, had to install an aftermarket intake hose on the car. The previously mentioned EL header install was a bit more of a tight squeeze than I realized, and the header pipe actually ended up contacting that little ballsack resonator that's right below the 90° bend of the stock intake hose (image below). A little bit of melting occurred before I realized the problem and I got a pinhole in that resonator from it melting through. Wasn't planning on messing with the stock intake, but also wasn't in the mood to try to find a right size cap to put in place of that part, nor try to get the part and most likely be told that it's only sold as a whole intake assembly, nor hunt down a replacement part secondhand, all the while driving around with an intake leak. I used a big zip tie looped around the sack resonator and the bigger box resonator that's adjacent to the airbox to pull the part away from the header pipe and keep it clear while I waited a few days for my part to show up.

Bought a Perrin inlet hose and got it installed, nothing new or cosmic to most folks here, of course. I know Mishimoto also makes a hose, and that was the original replacement part I had in mind, but the cost difference between the two didn't seem justifiable to me, so I went with the Perrin and saved myself about $50. I had to remove the pulley cover to access the PCV hose and the hose clamp at the throttle body, and that's about the only thing that made the 5 minute job a little longer. Of course the sound generator plumbing is mostly gone, too. I've seen a few people pull out the entire assembly up to the firewall, but the cap they provide you is meant to install over the piece of hose that comes out of the firewall and attaches to the frame down below the battery shelf, so that stayed in place and was capped as needed.

I got rained on during the job, so everything looks extra dirty and dusty under the hood, but the job's done, everything is running fine, and no more plastic is being harmed by hot exhaust components.
