I've been told that SCCA 'rules' say they do not class a new car in Street Touring for 1 or 2 years (forget which) after it's available. 2022 is 'guaranteed' to not have the new BRZ/GR86 allowed in any ST class. I'm not certain about 2023 season.

...but that is honestly the first time that I can remember that happening. The FRS/BRZ were classed in STX for the 2013 season. The ND1 was classed in STR for 2016. |

Has anyone seen a definitive spec on what the rear end ratio is for the second gen cars? It's certainly possible the newer cars will get a taller final drive and that will negate at least some of the power advantage. If the rest of the chassis is basically the same then it will come down to prep and driver.

I wouldn't be surprised if they class the new car higher. It's a pretty good power/torque bump.

I was going to post that I thought they should. The extra power should make it more competitive against the ND Miatas and they are in STR. It would be pretty silly for them to make it STX unless they are going to move the first gen cars into something STS because it's most likely that they won't be on par with each other.

It's no different then when the ND2 miata came out, and they put them all in the same classes as the ND1.
New car doesn't have a turbo or a major redesign. If I were a betting man, I'd put a lot of money on the second gen twins getting put into all the same classes as the first gens. |

On the road racing/time trials side, I think it's a safe bet they'll stay in the same tuner class since we already compete with S2000 CR's and ND2 Miatas. They will absolutely have to be moved out of their sport class (S6) because it's already LOL that they're in there. 86's dominate that class by miles.

I can't really see it going to STR. I don't think it could touch the ND2's and it doesn't make sense philosophically to be there.
I think the best thing that people committed to the old cars can hope for is an extra year or so to be classed, like what happened with the ND2. |

Anyone going to Nats this year and have an open seat for a codriver?
I'm asking on behalf of a friend from Hawaii, obviously too far for him to bring a car. He's driven with me a few times now, he's an amazing teammate and very easy on the hardware. I'd love to have him drive with me again, but with Kate moving to open this year we don't have a seat for him. Although he's pretty comfortable with the twins platform, it doesn't have to be an STX seat. He'll drive anything, if you have any leads let me know and I can put him in touch. Thanks! |

Not sure where some of you are getting your info but it really boils down to there being no requirement that a car be classed at the ST level. The first year the car comes out it almost certainly won't be in any ST class. After one or two seasons they will probably look at it's performance / popularity vs. the performance / popularity of the other ST classes and then a decision will be made. There's no guarantee it ends up in STX because it would upset the entire class as it stands right now. But there is also some upward pressure into ST classes because of a lot of the new cars coming out that people will inevitably want to own/drive (The Z, various Supra trims, various BMWs, the 2nd gen twins, etc).
What I would encourage a lot of you to do if you want the next gen in STX is buy one and drive it locally in time only or in an empty indexed class (as your region allows) to get some good data on paper of what they're capable of. Then gather up your data and write letters to the STAC requesting classing. That's what I intend to do and the more of us that do it the more quickly the car will get a class.

lol just buy a $30k car so I can write a letter.
That's nonsense. I talked to a STAC member a few months ago about it, so that's where my info came from. Either way, I'm not buying one unless I have to. Not many classes left that run 245/40s and where I also fit. |
