Sound with decat headers + the rest OEM?

Hey,

I wonder if anyone has any experience of using some decat headers but keeping the rest OEM. Well I have an AM axleback, but it is not making a big difference

Will I get a nice improvement in sound already with the decat headers? I definitely want it louder than now but nothing too extreme. So I wonder if decat headers is enough or should I consider also ordering a front pipe

Unless you plan to tune leave the cat inside the header alone.

Change the front pipe out if you just want to change sound.

Thank you, but I already changed the front pipe in the past...

I tried a Cobra decat resonated front pipe, the gains in sound were soo low with my current setup

With the decatted headers and the rest stock you won't get much extra volume in the sound. With loss of the stock heat shield on the oem headers you will get some ticking sounds and a bit of rasp (minor) due to loss of oem cat in the header.

Your best bet will be a dual resonated or resonated/catted front pipe paired with a nice backbox. If you have an exhaust shop local to you then better discuss what you really want and go from there.

Perfect example thank you!

So, in video one can only guess about the loudness and quality of sound. Could you tell me your impressions, how big was the change compared with stock headers?

And how was the change when you installed the catbck?

I've had my car with catless headers with the rest stock, and catless headers with aftermarket front pipe with a high flow cat and the rest being stock. I thought both setups sounded like shit.

With only the UEL header and the rest stock, you just have a nice rumble under your feet and it sounds meaner.

When I added my Corsa catback, it did get much louder!

When I picked up my car it was stock except for an ebay "cold air" and a muffler delete. I had planned on immediately going for some sort of exhaust work but with just the delete it sounded much better than I thought it would. Until you're ready to get the car tuned I would hold off on the cats. Mufflers do most of the work quieting the car down anyways

You mean a complete Muffler delete?

I have already an AM muffler. It´s for sure louder than the OEM but still not enough. So I still want to believe that a 4-2-1 catted EL would be a noticiable change

But based in your answers it seems I would need some AM midpipe too...

I would just make sure you leave the front pipe cat or you will be setting off car alarms…the Corsa has a pretty larger muffler at the axle and it’s still loud (this is with me keeping the stock catted front pipe)

100%. I didn't know it had the muffler delete until after I bought my headers. My original plan was to just do headers first and do a cat back down the road but these cars straight piped are LOUD. Start up especially, I felt bad for my neighbors those couple weeks.
But yes if you have the axel back already in there then getting a set of decat headers will also be a huge improvement. Louder yes but the bigger improvement I think it's the low end deeper sounds you get.
I'm currently running a tomei uel decat, OP, invidia catted fp, and the Perrin 2.5 resonated cat back. The noise is imo nearly perfect for these cars but I also have the the tomei ti decat front pipe that I'm waiting to get welded before it goes back in.

TLDR Running cats you don't really need a muffler but once you start removing the cats you will definitely want a good quality muffler if not a full cat back to clean up the noise lol.

I just had my car re-tuned and it’s cold start is at 2.5k and I can’t take the car in the morning anymore out of courtesy to my neighbors. I’m calling my tuner today to see if we can drop the cold-start down because I do not have a catt in the header to heat.
