The Hakone has never done it once. Did they change something?
Subaru and Toyota Parts show a supersession, so maybe they updated the part. No idea how to check when the part actually got replaced though

While I'm in there I'll fix the second door handle I've broken. Maybe I just jerk on the handle too hard, but I will say I'm amazed at how cheaply those things are built. The first replacement worked for a while but now the manual knob won't work so I have to activate with the power switch. That's better than having to roll down the window and open the door from outside, which I had to do after the first one broke.

The first time, a piece of the metal receptacle for the lower, green electronic lock cable broke, and jammed the handle. It's a very cheap pot metal fixture and I'm not surprised it broke. I replaced it with a new lock assembly, but I may have damaged it in the install. It worked for a while but now the manual lock button won't move. That's the upper, plastic or nylon receptacle which holds the white cable. I pulled the door panel enough to see that the plastic is partially broken off, so ordered another lock assy. I think you're supposed to have the button in lock position when snapping in the cable and I may not have set it that way.

The door handles on cars have been very cheap pot metal since about 1950.

crazy that you still managed to break the cable like I said, I have a now 11 year old who grew up in my twins and he has tugged on the handles especially when he was smaller (I let him shift for me lol) and he hasn't managed to break anything. compared to our prius and rav4 the door mechanisms feel robust enough. sounds like you're taking out your frustrations on your poor doors..

I broke the lock mechanism, not the cable. The cables look pretty stout. I hate working on doors because of that icky, sticky stuff. I've been in there twice now without getting it on me, but the detent mod will be a bigger challenge.
