Seriously, a lot of laypeople aren’t going to even know it was a redesign because the overall look is so similar.
There's the thing - you're on a webforum dedicated to this car. We are quite literally the opposite of laypeople where the car is concerned.

'22 does something different with the spats, love 'em or hate 'em. I *like* 'em, love would be too strong a word...

I wouldn't get to worked up about *why* the car looks like it does. If you don't like it you don't like it, that's enough. I've seen designs largely dictated by one guy guided solely by his artistic vision that suck, and I've seen "committee" designs that look great! Also, sometimes design aspects stolen from another car can look GREAT! Not a huge fan of the car itself, but I *love* (most of) the styling of the '93-'97 Camaro, and the front design language was basically from a '90 Geo Storm!
Not sure how the rockers are more similar between the current-gen and GR Yaris. The rockers are just *way* more exaggerated on the GR Yaris and not on the new car? The difference in Yaris is just that the rear fenders are even more bulged and the rockers integrate a bit better. It looks to me that you are just trying to give excuses to yourself and I won't even bother discussing this one more.

About the comment on the fenders, the C-pillars on the current car are wider and the fenders are not much exaggerated. To me this is a more proper design for a dedicated sports car platform. In the new car this is changed to thinner C-pillars and wider fenders. You can see the difference on the pillars and fenders in the picture below and other pictures posted above, but if you still don't see it is fine. I won't discuss this again more.

Finally, about a design largely dictated by one guy vs. a design by "committee" , I would say that it is not much about who did the design. What counts more is the final result. If people saying that the rear looks like it was taken from another car this is what it matters. On the other side, I am sure other people will not notice such details and the eye will just focus on the wider rockers and fender panels that add visually to a more *wow* effect.

Well, I guess they could've found a way to make the storage cubby smaller and less usable, but not by much (unless that whole thing pulls out).

Hmmm, the BRZ is already starting to grow on me. Also, I really love WRB. Gonna be a hard decision...

Yeah agree, especially with the STI parts they have too. A set of these bronze BBS wheels and lowered a bit would be pretty cool and they’re forged too!

I know what you mean. If the press photos are correct and the GR86 isn't going to be the "bargain interior" then it's really going to be tough. I keep flip-flopping. Both are going to look great with a lip/splitter, a nice drop, and wider wheels.

I'm also going to be curious how much wheel/tire we are going to be able to fit under one. Hopefully at least as much as the first gen, hoping for more.

I think they did an overall great job on maintaining the same identifiable car but with so many changes, including every single body panel. To me, it looks like Subaru had more influence on exterior styling compared to the the first model. The side fender vent puts it in line visually with the other Subaru sports cars. Funny enough, that is about to change slightly on the 2022 WRX/STI line.

Personally, if I was to take a beating on my heavily modified FR-S with 70K km, I'd be moving to something with the roof panel being the one most significantly modified and go with a true 2 seater. I guess there's always the 2022 911 GT3 but thats like a chunk of my house for something I could rarely drive. There's still the C8 or a possible MR2 hybrid/electric eventually. Again, the C8 would be $100K in the garage and it still looks kind of cheap next to a true exotic.

First world issues. LOL

The rear is evidence of that when you look at the new Impreza/ WRX.

I think Toyota and Subaru came to an agreement around front and made it "generic" so neither company would step too greatly on the other. Nothing about the headlights says unique or interesting - a big reason current gen owners and fans are upset with the design; it is sort of boring. Although I do think Gen 2 looks better than current-gen, I can agree that the car is lacking character.

I'm hoping the 2022 STI does not disappoint. I bought my 2018 STI off the lease so I could wait it out for the next gen release. Otherwise, I could just divest myself of the 2 car thing and get an M440i or M340i or something fast but usable. Too bad the Supra isn't a full Toyota but at least I can get that same engine in a 4 dr (+ 400 lb lol)

does anyone know of any good social media pages that have heavily focused on the aftermarket side of this gen yet? I know theres pages out there that have done widebody renders and all..butIm curious what people are coming up with for all the exterior stuff outside of full widebodys. im looking for more specifically the front bumper, front & rear lights.

You say the rear is pretty similar to the new wrx, but it is also pretty similar to the GR Yaris. In fact, I was expecting the GR86 to have a larger black trim on the trunk panel to bridge the lights and look more like the yaris.
