Well, as I said, my issue isn't the "slope" as much as the entire "squeezed out" look of the rear trunk lid.

I'm with you on this one - I dislike the squished rear trunk of the Supra - too narrow IMHO. I'd prefer the ducktail on it and the BRZ to extend further to the sides. I like the front view of the Supra, but really dislike the back end. But I'd rather they didn't have the ducktails altogether so it can be up to the individual to install what they want.

For the 2022 BRZ, I'd have preferred they make the trunk follow the lines of the car more, to provide a platform for different tail/spoiler options.

The so-called more aggressive stance just looks chunky and even clunky to me

Yeah, I think that's what I keep ever so slightly sticking on. The eye wants to naturally connect lines and curves, and the basic curves of the new body don't quite go together.

Borrowing someone else's pic, I scribbled some very basic lines on it to demonstrate. Where the Gen 1's curves tended to flow from front to back, the Gen 2's front creases don't really meet up with the back curves, resulted in a somewhat disjointed appearance

I'm still liking it overall, but it's not quite as cohesive as before.

In fact, the current-gen's curves around the front fender are a simple rotated conical surface (which creates the somewhat gimmicky "fender bumps"), centered on front axle line, that terminates well in front of the doors. From the back of the front wheel openings aft, the cross-section of the sides of the car is a simple extruded shape back to the "hips" of the car.

Whereas the 2022 car's front fenders curves are gently faired back into the shape of the car just aft of the front edge of the front door.

I find the new car's front fenders to be more elegantly shaped vs. current gen, and they definitely flow back further along the car's sides.

Yeah - I knew it'd be tough to show. The lines I drew mimic how my eyes follow the "apparent" lines.

To me it's not that the new front fenders aren't fine, just that they don't seem to flow into anything at the back of the car. They're up there doing their own thing, and then back is doing its own thing.

my problem with the rear is the visual trick/faux diffuser disrupted by the license plate. The faux diffuser should either run level below the plate or the plate should be set into the trunk (like the current gen) with the faux diffuser still level but higher on the bumper.

I haven’t cut the diffuser on my current gen, but the first mod I’d do to the new car is chop the diffuser straight across the plate indent and let the plate flap.

I gotta say, I like the lines you drew on the new car more than the current one!

One thing I always hated about the current car were the hiw the flares were on the fenders, it was more rx8/nc miata than s2000 or z32 300zx.

I wish the new car stuck out just a little wider to give it more of that s2k/z32 effect, but such is life.

I agree that the rear seems like it was taken from a different car. It is not about the lines per se, but the connection of the lines front to rear. It looks like they were trying to blend different lines from GR Yaris and STI S209 to the shape/proportions of the current 86/BRZ. Many will found these new lines interesting, but from my point of view the lines are not connected well together. Maybe the design team was under a rush or wanted to put everything on the new car? I heard that this time there were designers and engineers from both companies working as "one", while the first time responsibilities were divided by the two companies (e.g. Toyota was doing the design, Subaru the manufacturing etc.)

Am I the only one that finds it slightly amusing that we have pages of people nitpicking a design that a) hasn’t even been seen in person by most, b) will be one of the best looking cars available when it goes on sale this fall, and c) looks so much like the cars we all currently own/previously owned? Seriously, a lot of laypeople aren’t going to even know it was a redesign because the overall look is so similar. The first gen overall was a great looking car but it had all sorts of detail oddities and bizarre design decisions that made it look awkward at certain angles or perspectives. This is no different.

I'm not seeing any GR Yaris or S209 in the new car. If anything, the current car's front flares, being a simple profile shape rotated around the front axle line in a cone or ogive shape, bear resemblance to similar front flares on those cars. As opposed to the new car that has the front flares fair back into the main shape of the car more gradually going aft and don't resolutely continue revolving around the axle line as current-gen does like RX8 and NC Miata as @TheDonEffect noted.
