Now time to see if I can use the leather shavings as carpeting.

It is a greatly refined method that I used when I was a kid.
Cut a circle out of some plastic packaging, chuck it up in a drill, lightly touch the spinning circle with a course dremel grinder, mask off section, paint with clear smoke paint, remove mask and paint rest with lighter coat.

There are commercial versions available but they are over done and I don't think they look as realistic.

That first commercial version doesn't look good for some reason. The second one is nice, but reminds me of a comic book. Your trick looks more realistic.

I aim for what the eye actually sees. The others are more what the speed of a camera shutter captures.

A real modeler would have put a small electric motor in the Zero with wires running down the stand, connected to batteries in the base with a small switch to run the prop.

Just kidding - really, really a great job on that, Tcoat! I really like your use of the tiny bombers to give the observer the perspective from the Zero.

I forgot whether I mentioned this before, but I was born in England and spent the first 7 years of my life there. My dad took me to air shows in the early 70's and I was mesmerized by the Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes I'd see on display. We also used to go to museums whenever we could, and I'd be so impressed with the dioramas and models that accompanied many of the displays. It really takes skill, creativity, patience and attention to detail, so bravo!

Ya the whole diorama thing was never in my original plan this was just supposed to be a basic out of the box quick build.

But...

First I needed a figure from this kit for another project.

Then I had to wait for parts for the other one anyway.

Both needed the same paint so I may as well do a "simple" build.

Since it was going to be quick and easy I may as well just do wheels up and put it on a stand.

HMMMM this may be a good project to beat the crap outta some paint.

Then while looking for some parts in my spares I found a couple of tiny liberators.

Oh that doesn't look right with just a stationary prop.

You going to distress it? What colour are the internals? What colour is the pilot? Will it be sitting on a desk, kitchen unit, toilet or garden patio? Are you planning to use any hairspray?

Please don't feel like you have to explain your 'nerdiness' for detail, we enjoy whatever you produce.. BTW why didn't the Japanese use Japanese letters for their license numbers (ref: tail fin)?

Not really sure but suspect that it is because there was no formal military in Japan until the end of the 1800s. When they did form a standing military they based it around Britain.
This is especially true for the navy since they bought most of their ships from the UK and modeled the whole thing around the Royal Navy right down to the last detail. This was probably the start of using Latin lettering and Arabic numerals. Besides they are easier to read from a distance!

Japanese sailors WW2.

British sailors WW2

And inherited the British propensity to think that they need to rule the world...

Western lettering and numbering can be traced back in Japan to the 1500's back when dutch ships were their main trade. I wouldn't be surprised if if the british sgips were when it took hold.

Pretty neat subject though.
