Overall, I would say that they made a quick down and dirty "improvement" just because they were contracted to do so and the passion of the first version is gone.

This difference could be caused by focal length and distance from subject.

Yes I thought about it, but you can see clearly the difference of the rear quarter panel in this video (around 0:34 - 0:36). They made it smaller and enlarged the wheel fenders.

For sure we need to see it from live.

Something similar happened with new Mazda 3, where you had very different perception of the C pillar from photo to live.

New front end looks lower to me. I believe the 0.4" lower height is from lowering the whole platform that amount, but just a theory. For sure without the fender bumps, the fenders are lower over the wheels. Dunno why some think it looks *higher*. But not gonna trouble meself to do photo analysis!

Gonna disagree here as well. I think it's a very well-executed design, looks to me like a LOT of loving care and attention to details. Of course no design appeals to EVERYone, but I like it as much as the 1st gen, which took a while to grow on me.

addendum: I forgot I was in the GR86 forum! I actually like the 1st-gen FR-S front bumper better, but the new GR86 front is a huge improvement over the current model!

Going to agree with Zdan since the Gen2 will be MY first version and I'm sure I'll be very passionate with it. May have to put plastic slipcovers over the seats.....

Yes true. This is based ONLY on media information posted till now. Although, I can hardly believe that all of them have an issue of focal length and distance from subject.

Until now it looks that first generation C pillar has changed to a more industrial ordinary design.

Don't get me wrong. I like the fact that first generation was not a one time show, but continued to a next generation. I agree that we needed this car instead of getting cancelled like every other thing in the world culture today.

However, this doesn't mean that I should not have a critical mind and say that I like EVERYTHING on this generation like some people are saying. I believe that in certain areas it is really an improvement, but as all things in life you have to make in other areas compromises.

I know it's unlikely, but I hope they have some good color choices. Cars have become so dull, and this screams out for some better options. I'm not asking for a full vintage MOPAR palette here - just something beyond the usual black, dark gray, dark blue, red, silver and white.

I'd pick any of these (I threw the metallic brown in there because I think that's be a pretty cool retro nod to the early Celica color options)

I've noticed a trend with toyota that they offer bright and non-normal colors the first 2 years of production, and then drop to the normal silver, black, white, dark red, dark blue colors after that.

It might be just a coincidence in the aligned pictures, but it looks that the shark fin is placed in newer car a few centimeters back. This means that it is placed a bit lower cause of the rear incline and hence the 0.4" lower height. If this is really the case, then it would be the most lame marketing focused "improvement".

nikitopo, while I find the alignment of hard points interesting visually, your negative take on the lowered overall height is a very strong reason that YOU should not consider buying one. Imagine, blaming it on misleading marketing. lol
The car IS lower, that has nothing to do with marketing and everything to do with how high the garage door needs to be in order to not hit the highest point.
No offense, but stick to math if thats your forte. Marketing not so much.
