Always trying to improve my shifting and I have a question around coming to a stop in-gear.
For safety and wear (brakes) reasons, I do not coast into a stop sign. My typical method now when coming to a stop from around 50mph 5th, 4th, 3rd; roll to a stop in 3rd till around 900rpm then push in the clutch. This puts me around 10-15 mph. Is anyone downshifting all the way to 2nd before a stop? Seems excessive, but maybe I am being lazy.

I'd rather wear out my Brakes (cheap) than any associated Clutch/Trans parts (expensive).

The idea is you let the engine rev-down AND brake.

It's not a sequential box so no need to go through all the gears. I often do 3-1 shifts on at the end of short straights into hairpins.

I share this sentiment. If I'm coming to a stop sign, I'm doing so in neutral. No reason to engine brake if you're coming to a complete stop. As above, I'd rather put heat and friction wear on the system designed for that exact purpose

“Engine braking occurs when a driver takes their foot off the throttle. The throttle valve closes, a vacuum forms and the engine slows the car down. This is the same case in a manual transmission. It’s often been rumored that engine braking is bad for your car, but it can actually prove beneficial, as Fenske explains in the video.”

I didn't say that it does not have a place. Just that I don't downshift for the sole purpose of bringing the car to a stop

I'd skip the intake, FWIW. Not much to be had over just doing a tube and a drop in for far less cash. Quote:

Put on some XP10 pads in preparation for my first track day and they’re loud as hell. I sound like a school bus coming to a stop.

Got a sweet re-usable/washable air filter in the mail today from ProTuningLab ($25!)
This weekend is gonna be fun putting on the drive belt, removing stock air intake/filter, and adding the drop in filter + Perrin inlet tube! Also gonna paint up the alternator and water pump plastic covers with VHT Metallic Copper. Maybe I'll do the battery tiedown too and re-install it. I havent had it on the last year as it's rusted and ugly. Almost the same color anyways haha Going to the local Subaru dealer to pick up some other items tomorrow. Fender garnish clips, 2gal Super Coolant, Left Cowl cover, and a bumper cover spacer panel for the front Probably a good idea to ask for some clips to install them back with before I leave...
