I believe this is the GR AWD version that will come to US, but I might be wrong.

I am putting my money on the "shared development of an EV" as was announced in the same release when they said they were going to do a second gen 86/BRZ.

http://media.toyota.ca/releases/toyo...rm-and-bev-suv

https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/co.../29916271.html

The key in my mind is that the latest announcement states very clearly "A new model" and I just can't see them doing a joint hot hatch when both already have them of their own (even if not in the US).
Toyota has the "GR hot hatch" in the upcoming vehicles but that is all they have said. Anything beyond that has been speculation on the part of the clickbaits. Could be almost anything but to think it is a joint venture with Subaru seems a streach.

I've seen the EV theory around but I dunno, would they really mark an EV as a Gazoo Racing/Subaru collab?

Unless it'll be a super expensive EV with similar power to something like a Mach-E.

Why not?
It isn't a great theory but it is the one that I can find the most official supporting evidence for as far as a collaborative effort goes.
They seem to have started marking everything "GR" anyway so that label is getting watered down quickly. It is just replacing TRD as the "Performance" version of things.
What I do not think it is is anything at all to do with the 86/BRZ. They just wouldn't bring Subaru in to unveil the second Gen 86.

Have they? I thought GR is the one "performance" badge I haven't seen 3M'd to more cars than just the Supra and GRMN 86 in Japan so far.

The only supporting evidence I have for the theory that it is for the 2nd gen 86 is simply that it wouldn't surprise me for them to "rename" it to GR 86 to go along with the GR Supra. This would explain it being a GR announcement.

But .

Oh, the results are tied at 33% each. I guess we just don't know. Of course I would prefer a performance edition but in today's world it might a super cool EV with a weight of 1500kg+.

That is just it. What makes it a GR 86 all of a sudden? a naming standard or actual GR input? The GR was always reserved for the actual racing division not a slightly changed street car. Even calling the Supra a GR is diminishing the name in my mind. Sure maybe they had some input but is it actually a race division car off the lot?

GR has been limited production runs of "tuned road going sports cars with the DNA of motorsports" since 2009 with GRMN reserved for higher-output variations. GR happens to be Akio Toyoda's personal project and it is no surprise that it became a selling point (brand) the same year he took over as president of Toyota. Most of there stuff hasn't made it outside of Japan though which is why it feels new.

As far as the GR Supra... Gazoo Racing was heavily involved in the chassis tuning of the car on the ring and even offer a GT4 race car version to special order should you have very deep pockets. https://www.toyota.com/content/ebroc...-ebrochure.pdf

I’m 50/50 on this. I’d definitely like to see Toyota’s version but also would love to see a brand new car announced.
I don’t believe any of the “rumors” and take them with a grain of salt.
We’ll know in 4 days

I'm with Tcoat here, probably not the 86, especially as a lot of (very credible sounding) rumors express that Toyota wants to put off revealing the next generation 86 until next year for... reasons..

Exactly. They 3M'd already the brand and there was even a "GRMN" sedan car called Mark X GRMN. It was just not that visible outside Japan.
