HKS GTIII Turbo vs. Jackson Racing C38

Hey guys,

So, I had plans to supercharge my 2013 10 Series, I spoke to Kinetic Autoworks in MD and they were unable to get a hold of a Jackson Racing supercharger kit but recommend me an HKS GTIII turbo. I wanted to get some input on which route I should pursue.

Here are mods I currently have done:
  • Crawford Intake Manifold Spacers
  • OFT E85 Tune
  • FT86 Speedfactory Catted Headers,
  • Tomei Overpipe
  • Invidia Front Pipe (Resonated)
  • Magnaflow Catback (with resonator delete)

Jackson Racing build plans (power goals 300-320 WHP)
  • JACKSON RACING DUAL RADIATOR / OIL COOLER V2
  • JACKSON RACING C38 SUPERCHARGER SYSTEM
  • ACT 2013 Scion FR-S XT/Perf Street Sprung Clutch Kit - SB8-XTSS
  • INJECTOR DYNAMICS 1050X
  • DEATSCHWERKS DW300 SERIES FUEL PUMP
  • Turbosmart TS-0203-1022 Kompact 25mm Dual Port Universal Fit Blow Off
  • Valve
  • P-Tuning Flex Fuel Kit

I eventually want to install a high boost pulley on the C38 but that
would be after I save up some additional funds to build the engine and
have stronger connecting rods, valve springs installed.

The HKS Turbo build plans (same power goals):
  • HKS GTIII RS Sports Turbine Kit Subaru BRZ
  • JACKSON RACING DUAL RADIATOR / OIL COOLER V2 (heard maybe using the stock radiator would be a good option with a dedicated oil cooler HKS and JR both make one for our platform and not sure which I should go with)
  • ACT 2013 Scion FR-S XT/Perf Street Sprung Clutch Kit - SB8-XTSS
  • INJECTOR DYNAMICS 1050X
  • DEATSCHWERKS DW300 SERIES FUEL PUMP
  • P-Tuning Flex Fuel Kit
  • RADIUM DUAL OIL CATCH CAN KIT
  • JR 4 BAR MAP Sensor

Any thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

add an electronic boost controller to the turbo and take that :P
a lot more fun and more satisfying if it's a street car

You can go with a much less extreme clutch if your goal is ~300whp.
Since you're asking for opinions, unequivocally turbo.

the c38 set up is essentuially what i got but with the hbss clutch. i talked to csg and they said it will hold even the high boost pulley which is what i got. also called jackson racing to ask about the c38 + hbp since it doesnt seem common and they said it makes 1-2 less psi which im fine with. i figure ill eventually blow the engine and have to build it then run the RS pulley. i also have the koyo rad + jrsc oil cooler instead of the 2 in 1 and a mishimoto catch can. i went SC instead of turbo because no lag and less heat

if you ever tried a turbo of the dimension of this hks gtIII or greddy 518z, you d feel that the lag is quite subtle and the engine produces a fair amount of torque while spooling (which is also very quick)
With centrifugal sc you get this lazyness at low rpm that's even more annoying that the subtle lag of a not-too-big turbo

Plus you get the complete boost control with turbo
And lot more fun.. unless you get to drive constantly full throttle over 4000rpm , then the jackson is a fun beast for sure

if you are driving under 4k why do you even need more power? if you are under 5k in autocross or track sprints you are doing it wrong

autocross doesn' t even exist where I am, track i do well with my hks v2 sc if i'm willing to go, but we are also talking about OP, and i just gave him my opinion

My car is a street car anyway , i can't go constantly full throttle high rpm.
With a turbo you get the fun easier.

It will be driven mostly on the street. Any recommendations for an electronic boost controller?

That’s the goal until I start building the engine. Eventually 400whp would be the ultimate goal but that would be later down the line once the car is no longer my daily. With that being said that was the clutch they recommended to me, if I plan to enjoy the ~300whp for a while before doing the engine work any other clutch kit you might recommend?

Are you on E85 or pump gas? I was planning on using E85 as there is a decent amount of stations in my area. How do you feel about the Radium Dual Catch Can vs. the Mishimoto?

Radium catch cans are great for boosted
Mishimoto I saw people with it leaking under boost

Most important is PCV side, and add at least a WRX STI pcv valve

If you're planning on hitting 400WHP, it should be fine. I had the Exedy stage 1 on my car and it held 330WHP and 260 WTQ without an issue. Bolts onto stock flywheel, drives just like stock with just a little extra pedal effort.
I do not think it would hold 400WHP though, so you may as well stick with that if you're going for 400.
