I think Toyota knew exactly what it was doing with the Supra. They are a highly financially oriented company that does fastidious analysis. I imagine they found that many Supra buyers would be buying the car for the name and perception even more than the actual performance. It was also no doubt a calculated business move to partner with BMW and buy a rebodied Z4 from them rather than make the capital investment to manufacture their own car. Likewise they probably found that the minimal incremental sales of a manual wouldn't be worth the investment (or maybe BMW just said no, that they wouldn't certify a manual for the US). They're doing this to maximize financial returns, and are probably happy with the results.
While many of us might compare the Supra and 400Z, and on paper the specs have many similarities (size, power, etc.), I suspect there may not be as much overlap in the actual buyers as we might think. I would bet 400Z buyers will be more focused on actual performance, and that there will be a reasonably high manual transmission take rate. People who were attracted to the 370Z but turned off by the dated interior (and the silliness of an 'obsolete infotainment system') should be very happy with the updates in the 400Z. I personally liked the 'Japanese Mustang' feel of the 370Z, and would have bought one - if I'd been able to find a Nissan dealer with a shred of integrity and an available car. I'm eagerly looking forward to a test drive. |

I could live with yellow and a black roof. But in general, black roofs remind me too much of what I used to do to my cars back in high school with a rattle can of Rust-Oleum spray paint, trying too hard for that 'race car' look. |

350hp 3.0TT for 32k base 444hp 3.0TT with Sport for 40k base 500hp 3.0TT Nismo for 50k base They might try the same thing they did with the Q50/60 cars. |

It got out of hand. Body shops and other places would do an aftermarket vinyl top on a car. They charged extra when they called it a 'landau roof'. Most of them were hideous abominations. I didn't like them back then either. Always wanted to rip off a vinyl top like a deranged baboon at a drive-through safari. Some of the 50's cars look fun in 2- and 3-tone paint schemes, in a kitsch Flash Gordon kind of way. But to my eyes a hardtop sports car looks best when the body lines speak for themselves. |

I hope it just has a Z badge. The "400" part is pretty dumb.
Honestly it should be the 300Z.

They are cheaper than STIs in Canada, by a decent amount too.
