This could be exciting though, if there was significant effort taken to differentiate the models. It is amazing how the same grey body can move thru production with significant numbers of different parts for interior, trims, lighting, springs/dampers etc.

I have a Scion and a Subaru, so not cheering for one in particular, but it's encouraging with the possibility the two cars will be significantly different in feel when carbon copies are so much easier to make.
I doubt we will see much difference beyond what the FRS and the BRZ had originally. The biggest difference will be in how each company's marking department tries to make their version seem far better.

Toyota needs to acknowledge that this car exists first.....
Cuz the current differentiation between the 86 and the BRZ is that the BRZ exists!

Got a deposit on the Subaru today.

Subaru only required 500, whereas Toyota need 1k.

Its not because I necessarily believe the rumours about the Toyota, but I just can't afford to go into next year without a car and I like both of the fronts about the same, toyota for its aggressiveness and subaru for its quirkiness.

I dunno how much you want to read into this but those japanese rumor sites where the delay was first mentioned has a rumored delay until march 2022....

Yeah im not waiting that long....and if it is gonna be delayed until then it better be much more different than the FRS/BRZ started off like.

Delay Explained

https://jalopnik.com/toyota-reported...ped-1846542445
I like the first commentor's optimism that Toyota may try to get a turbo in there to differentiate it.

This is just another repeat of the clickbaits playing the telephone game!
"A report from Japan’s Next Car Web"
Worthless as any form of real information.

Yep! Fun how so many put all their trust into such things as that slide until it doesn't suit their agenda anymore and they discard it for the new theories. That has been around since early last year and since it says "SUMMER 2021" should be an indicator that they planned a later release right from the start.
But NOOOOOOO they must be rebuilding the whole thing since a magazine said so.

The tundra is also rumored to be delayed...im not sure if its just later or it got pushed to 2022, so i don't know how accurate that powerpoint has become after the sienna and the Venza (which i am guessing was the 2020 crossover?)

also...does anyone know what that new 2021 CUV was supposed to be? Was that the Corolla Cross which hasnt gotten any attention outside of ASEAN markets?

You can come take my kidneys if this is anything more than a production (covid/chip) delay, or Toyota looking to market and release the car in Spring when people are actually buying performance vehicles.

You don't let a car go through 5 years of development that you will sell (maybe) 10K globally each year and then at zero hour make a last-minute production change. Too costly and a waste of resources. If it were the new Camry being delayed because market research had a shit fit, sure. Delaying an important car 6 months to make a needed change makes sense.

If they were actually going to do anything meaningful, they would do it as a TRD or other special release 2 or 3 years down the road.

We haven't even hit either of those release periods yet so to say they are "delated" is a bit premature.
Yes, I would guess the crossover is what they were talking about. There is nothing saying that slide is US market only.

OOOH I got a juicy one (lets see how long before someone picks it up as fact)

What if Toyota wanted to differentiate from the BRZ by allowing the BRZ to take the "lower end" of the sports car market, so that Toyota can fill that gap above it that will fit right underneath the Supra 2.0?

meaning the sports car heirarchy unofficially becomes

BRZ = 30-40k
GR86 = 40-50k
Supra 2.0 = 50-60k
Supra 3.0 = 60+k

CAD pricing, i dunno what the US pricing is for these cars.

Nah, they are just getting ready to release the MR2, but it will just be a front engine midship, so FMR2, maybe they'll even cannibalize the naming a bit and call it an FMR86.

They also plan to release the Celica, but I don't have that much insider knowledge on that one, it's going to at least be slightly cheaper than GR86.

Celica 20k-30k
GR86 30k-40k
FMR86-2 40K-50K
Super 50k-60k
Supra 60k+
