my '14 is at about 40k. i noticed it first started peeling after a few very twisty/sweaty-palm roads, which was about 25-30k.

My '15 has about 20k on it, has always been garaged and has a sunshade when it has to be outside. My limited experience with bonded leather leads me to think that moisture is a major caused of the peel. And it doesn't take much. My son had a couple of chairs covered in the stuff. Both peeled like a redhead with a sunburn in less than a year. Dampness from sweat, or washing your hands, or taking a shower is more than enough to set it off.
To use that on a steering wheel is just plain cruel.

Check out local public transport, see what they use. No issues with peeling and they experience hundreds if not thousands of different drivers over their lifetime.. |

most drivers expect a soft-touch wheel, and there isn't a soft-touch material that doesn't absorb oils. of course, the main thing that would help this would be for everyone to report the issue to their dealer and demand a fix, but most of us are out of warranty now, and it would take weeks/months for most dealers to sort out for something that they'd likely end up charging me for anyways.

I got my '14 new and had the steering wheel replaced within 1 year by the dealership.
It lasted fine for another ~5 years, but it's recently started peeling again at the end of last year. I went ahead and found a used flat-bottom wheel and just going to replace it. Maybe I'll send my OEM one to swedit in the future.

I noticed that If I used the side of my palm to spin the wheel around while parking, the finish on the wheel would twist up a little at the contact point.
I stopped doing that and the finish has been fine since then. It may be a user interface modification issue.
