Funny thing, my coworker asked me the other day why don't I do boats or planes. I told him my lack of weathering skills

I then told him about the diorama you have planned out, and his jaw dropped to the floor!

Yep.
Base interior built and ready for base paint. I am not going nuts adding detail beyond the kit since the cockpit will not be the focus and with the narrow opening and canopy you will barely be able to see what is in there anyway.
I will make what is there pop with paint.

The Seiran won't be too weathered since they were pretty much still brand new at the end of the war and were never used beyond training flights.

But...

While doing my research I found that most WW2 Japanese planes (especially the Zeros with the dark green paint) looked like crap very quickly. I think they sourced their paint through the same place that Subaru does!

So...

I wanted two standing pilot figures waiting for their aircraft to be prepped and went shopping.
Hasegawa makes a set of pilots that has two Japanese but they look stumpy and deformed in a dwarfish kind of way. The cheapest I could get the set was $50 since it is out of production.

Tamiya makes a zero kit that comes with 4 really nice figures that at least look human. One even looks suitably impatient and perfect for my plan. The whole works was only $30!

Now the Zero and figures are on their way and when I am done the dio I can go to town and do a serious weathering job.

You, sir, work fast!

So now you will have another plane you can build! That impatient one on the left! I wonder if you can paint his face to look super annoyed. HAHA

Doesn't seem to matter who made them since they are all pretty bad. Probably more a matter of the conditions they were operated under and materials shortages later in the war more than anything. The US planes used under the same conditions are not as uniformly worn looking.

The chipped finishs will be fun to do though!

A bucket of oil going in. I bet that smoked on the line waiting to take off. I also like the bright shiny propeller tips.

One time i flew into the upper Amazon in a plane with green stained props, kind of unsettling.

Meet the ground crew that will be prepping the Seiran
They are the from the really really old Monogram molds and come with pretty much every US bomber kit. Of course they will by altered to be Japanese.
From left to right I introduce you to:

Let's have a toast even though my beer mug has disappeared man.

Ripped my shirt off and am going to use my freakishly long and skinny arms to cut you with this box cutter dude.

and the ever popular I am far to drunk to walk guy.
